Sony confirmed during a July 31 earnings call that it will move forward with phasing out PlayStation physical discs for new games starting in 2028. Despite ongoing community backlash and player boycott plans, chief financial officer Lin Tao cited broader content digitalization trends as the driving factor behind the decision.
Almost a month after announcing the end of PlayStation discs for new games starting in 2028, Sony is standing firm against mounting criticism from physical gaming advocates and disappointed fans. Addressing the controversy during its latest earnings Q&A on July 31, leadership acknowledged the strong emotional connection players have with physical media but emphasized that the industry-wide shift toward digital ecosystems is irreversible.
Sony CFO Lin Tao Explains the Digitalization Shift
During the briefing, Sony chief financial officer Lin Tao explained through an interpreter that the decision to phase out physical discs was reached after careful deliberation and extensive consideration of the future gaming landscape. Tao pointed to a global transition away from physical formats across all forms of entertainment.
Tao also addressed the emotional weight of the transition for players, noting that games are deeply connected to fond memories for many users. While Sony understands those community sentiments and wants to explore ways to engage gamers within a future digital ecosystem, the company intends to cautiously move the discontinuation plan forward.
Fan Backlash and Planned August Boycott Movements
The announcement has sparked significant friction between Sony and its player base. A loud contingent of critics has continued to voice disapproval, leading some players to organize an initial boycott featuring a week-long blackout scheduled for mid-August.
Physical gaming advocates have sharply criticized the platform holder’s trajectory. Physical gaming advocate DoesItPlay took to X to voice frustration over the upcoming hardware changes, pointing to a wider pattern of unpopular decisions. Ending physical discs in 2028 feels like the last straw,
the advocate announced on X, citing studio closures like Bluepoint, live-service strategies, canceled fan events, and the state of PS VRS2 as compounding grievances.
Retailer Relations and Coexisting With PC Gaming
Investment analysts during the briefing questioned how abandoning discs would alter Sony’s relationships with traditional retail partners and whether an all-digital console could effectively compete with gaming PCs. Tao responded that publishers will still be able to ship empty retail boxes containing download codes to stores in regions like North America.
Regarding retail partnerships, Tao stated that regional characteristics require thorough dialogue with each partner to achieve a win-win outcome. Furthermore, Sony does not view the physical disc as a necessary differentiator against personal computers. Instead, the company relies on curated content, a stable gaming environment, and hardware affordability to position its consoles in the market, expressing confidence that PlayStation can coexist peacefully with PC gaming.
