The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office announced Monday evening that Aaron F. Farinacci was taken into custody around 5 p.m. on suspicion of first-degree arson connected to the rapidly moving Old Trails Fire, according to reporting from local officials.
Farinacci is currently being held on $1 million bail and is scheduled for his first court appearance on Tuesday, the outlets reported. Authorities revealed that the suspect carries a prior felony manslaughter conviction out of Arizona, though he has no prior convictions for arson.
Witness Sightings and the Airway Heights Police Encounter
The sequence of events leading to Farinacci’s arrest began around 10 a.m. Saturday when a local resident spotted a man bending down beside the road near Euclid Road and Old Trails Road. That witness later spotted the same individual while driving home and notified the Airway Heights Police Department, law enforcement records show.
An Airway Heights police officer located the man roughly 1.5 miles from where the fire originated. The officer questioned him, gathered his contact information, and released him at the time. Over the subsequent days, detectives with the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office pieced together evidence and tracked down the suspect before executing Monday’s afternoon arrest, investigators noted.

Investigators and state natural resource officials have quickly narrowed down the origins of the disaster. Washington State Department of Natural Resources spokesperson Ryan Rodruck stated that natural causes have been definitively ruled out for the Old Trails fire, which was reported around noon Saturday near West Euclid Road and North Old Trails Road, northeast of Airway Heights, according to details published by The Spokesman-Review.
The Old Trails blaze is one of three fires currently burning in Spokane County, with the group totaling nearly 8,000 acres. While the Old Trails fire is presumed human-caused, the exact ignition triggers for the Autumn Lane and Fairview fires remain under active investigation.

The human and structural toll of the regional wildfires continues to mount as emergency crews battle active fronts. Authorities report that roughly 700 structures have been destroyed across Spokane County, and up to 65,000 residents have been forced to flee their homes.
Satellite imagery is being compiled across approximately 1,100 additional locations to assess the full scale of the commercial and residential damage. Meanwhile, the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office reports it is actively trying to locate 14 individuals who requested assistance during the emergency.

In response to the escalating wildfire crisis fueled by hot, dry weather and heavy smoke drifting across Washington, Gov. Bob Ferguson declared a statewide emergency. The action institutes an outdoor burn ban across all 39 counties through September 30, prohibiting campfires, debris burning, and land clearing.

“I don’t think I’m going to rebuild here,” Aric Frank, who lost his home in the fire, said. “I don’t ever want to have to relive a fire coming up this hill again, and I’ve been in Spokane my entire 64 years.”
