On Saturday, Wu Qing, head of the China Securities Regulatory Commission, called on China’s fund management sector—which holds assets of about 13 trillion dollars—to support local innovation while warning against excessive speculation and betting on trending investment concepts.
Speaking at a conference, Wu stated that fund managers should avoid random bets on specific sectors or launching investment funds when stock prices are high for the purpose of quick profits. He added that China’s thriving emerging and future industries are in urgent need of capital support, and that the country’s fund industry should focus on national strategies while enhancing global competitiveness and handling external shocks.
The regulatory remarks followed a tightening of supervision on China’s private investment fund sector, which holds assets of about 3.4 trillion dollars, and came weeks after Beijing tightened restrictions on cross-border investments described as illegal.
