Mexican TikTok influencer Cesar Gastelum was shot dead by two men on a motorcycle while livestreaming outside a fast-food restaurant in Culiacán on Tuesday evening, August 4. Security officials confirmed a major security operation is underway following the attack in Sinaloa’s capital.
Popular content creator Cesar Gastelum, known across TikTok for his comedy sketches, recurring characters, music covers, and daily life broadcasts, was recording content with three other people outside a KFC restaurant in Culiacan, Sinaloa, at approximately 8 p.m. local time on Tuesday. Gastélum and his companions were filming outside a fast food restaurant in Tres Ríos, wearing bright orange coats and bags typically associated with delivery drivers.
Local media outlets initially reported that the distinctive outfits led police to mistake the victim for a delivery worker before officials verified his identity. The live recording captured two helmeted individuals on a motorcycle approaching the group. The driver of the motorcycle drew a handgun and fired once at Gastelum, striking him in the head before fleeing the scene.
Security Response and Cartel Violence in Culiacán
Gastelum died at the scene, and his body remained near the exit of the restaurant drive-thru while police and military personnel secured the area. A security official in Sinaloa state confirmed Gastelum’s death and noted that a significant security operation was actively underway.
The killing unfolds against a backdrop of persistent violence in Culiacán, which serves as the capital of Sinaloa state. The city has remained the epicentre of a violent internal conflict between the sons of Joaquín “El ChapoGuzman, known as Los Chapitos, and long-time cartel leader Ismael
El Mayo” Zambada for sole control of the organization. Violence across the state escalated sharply after the two factions fell out in September 2024.
Echoes of Past Livestream Murders in Mexico
The attack on Gastelum draws immediate parallels to previous high-profile killings of social media personalities in Mexico. The incident recalled the May 2025 killing of 23-year-old beauty influencer Valeria Marquez, who was shot multiple times and killed during a TikTok livestream at the salon where she worked in Zapopan, located in the western state of Jalisco. Prosecutors investigated Marquez’s death under femicide protocols.
Mexican authorities subsequently announced the arrest in Jalisco of Ramon Angel Alvarez Ayala, also known as “El R-1”. Security Minister Omar Garcia Harfuch identified Alvarez Ayala as the leader of a criminal cell linked to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). Authorities have connected Alvarez Ayala to Marquez’s murder and accused him of ordering and financing the November 2025 murder of Uruapan mayor Carlos Manzo.
Additionally, Gastelum’s Instagram account featured photographs of his travels and nights out, including an image of him visiting the grave of Leobardo Aispuro, an influencer known as El Gordo Peruci
. Police noted that Aispuro’s December 2024 fatal shooting may have been connected to the rivalry between the warring Sinaloa cartel factions.
Ongoing Investigation and Unanswered Questions
Police and forensic experts cordoned off the Tres Ríos neighborhood following Tuesday’s shooting. Investigators are examining cartridge casings and CCTV footage for clues regarding the two suspects on the motorcycle who fled the scene.
Authorities have not yet made any arrests in connection with Gastelum’s death, and it remains unclear whether the content creator had received any threats prior to the attack.
