Carson Beck Impresses Cardinals Coach Mike LaFleur in Preseason Debut

While observers noted that preseason performances against players who likely won’t be on a roster in a month shouldn’t be overblown, Beck confirmed the Cardinals’ priors and showed he wouldn’t implode. It was a good performance from Beck that served as a building-block performance for the third-round pick. If it’s not there, he checks it down, and if they are in a bad play or a bad call, he doesn’t make it worse.

LaFleur pointed to a specific sequence involving a keeper call where they faked left and kept right back, noting there were about eight guys in his face. LaFleur recalled telling Beck prior to the snap, Hey, if the strong safety comes off the edge, you know, just get some depth and be ready to ditch this. Sure enough, when the rookie saw the strong safety, he went and laughed about it at the top.

LaFleur admitted he was not laughing at the time because it was a crap call, but praised the rookie because man, he saved us in terms of just ditching that right there. Asserting that ditching the ball was the right play in that moment, LaFleur stated he was proud of the way he played and called it a good, good first stepping stone for him.

Reflecting on the wider context of the matchup, LaFleur added, “This was a really cool environment. I’m glad that we got to play in this, and you never know if you’re ever going to be able to play in one of these again. So, albeit a preseason game, it doesn’t count in the win-loss, but it was a cool environment for him to just kind of, you know, ‘Hey, it’s just another game’, and that’s the way he took it, and he’s been in big ones.” LaFleur also credited Hack, and particularly Schaub in terms of just the way Schaub played, for influencing that focused mindset of taking it one play at a time.

The strong debut will not have any effect on Jacoby Brissett’s grip on the opening day starting gig for the 2026 season. However, the rookie could push Gardner Minshew for the backup role with similar positive performances in the preseason.
