China’s new-energy vehicle sales captured more than 60 percent of total monthly car sales in July 2026, according to industry data. The domestic automotive market saw rapid growth in domestic adoption and surging international exports, led by pure electric models.
Market Share in July 2026
That performance marks the first time monthly uptake has crossed the 60 percent threshold, lifting the cumulative market share for the first seven months of the year above 50 percent.
Production figures from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers detail the scale of the expansion. In July alone, NEV output surpassed 1.57 million units while sales topped 1.56 million units. Those totals represent year-on-year gains of 26.8 percent and 23.7 percent, respectively.
Pure Electric Momentum and Seasonal Shifts
Pure electric vehicles drove the bulk of the July surge. Output and sales for battery electric models both cleared 1 million units, rising over 30 percent from the same period last year. For the broader January-to-July window, NEV output reached 9.01 million units with sales hitting 9 million units, both figures climbing nearly 10 percent from a year earlier.
That green surge stood in contrast to the wider car market. Overall auto output and sales in July stood at 2.57 million and 2.58 million units, registering slight declines both month-on-month and year-on-year. Industry officials attributed the broader cooling to seasonal factors. Deputy Secretary-General Chen Shihua noted that July is traditionally a slow period, compounded by early demand pulled forward during the half-year sales push, persistent high temperatures, and severe weather including typhoons and flooding in regional markets.
Export Expansion and Global Reach
Beyond domestic showrooms, Chinese vehicle manufacturers found robust demand overseas. Total vehicle exports maintained strong momentum by topping 1.04 million units for the second consecutive month, an 81.3 percent increase from a year prior.

NEVs played a dominant role in that international push. Overseas shipments of new-energy models surged 1.5-fold to 553,000 units in July, accounting for more than half of all vehicle exports for the second straight month. Across the first seven months of the year, cumulative exports reached 6.14 million units—up 66.8 percent—with NEVs accounting for 2.91 million of those shipments, representing a 1.2-fold increase.
