US Stock Markets Tumble as September Inflation Exceeds Forecasts

U.S. stock markets tumbled on Wall Street following a higher-than-expected September inflation reading and dropping artificial intelligence shares, erasing hundreds of billions of dollars in market value. According to Investing, the S&P 500 lost approximately $770 billion at the close.

Wall Street Suffers Sharp Losses After Hot September Inflation Data

Wall Street closed down sharply as consumer prices rose and artificial intelligence stocks declined, according to Investing. The S&P 500 fell 1.11%, dropping 86.50 points to close at 7,718.95. The Nasdaq Composite slid 1.88%, losing 511.51 points to finish at 26,692.87. Meanwhile, the Dow Jones Industrial Average remained nearly flat, slipping 0.09% or 48.62 points to 51,621.48, supported by healthcare shares.

Market analysts attributed the downturn to fresh inflation figures that alter expectations for the Federal Reserve. Consumer prices increased 0.6% in September on a monthly basis, matching expectations, while rising 3.7% annually, which came in above the 3.6% forecast. Core inflation jumped to 0.3% monthly and 2.6% annually, topping the respective forecasts of 0.2% and 2.5%.

According to Philip Blancato of Ladenburg Thalmann Asset Management (OSAK), the data puts the Federal Reserve firmly back in the picture for December. Blancato anticipates that core inflation will approach 3% next year due to the impact of oil prices. Reuters reported that the probability of a quarter-point interest rate hike jumped to about 60%, up from 21.6% prior to the release.

Principal Asset Management’s Seema Shah noted that stronger core inflation and economic resilience mean the Fed’s job is not done, projecting increases in December and early 2027. Amid these shifts, the 10-year Treasury yield rose to roughly 5.335% and the U.S. dollar climbed to its highest level since April 2025.
