Health authorities in Egypt, Morocco, and international organizations have rolled out updated seasonal influenza vaccination campaigns as autumn arrives across the Northern Hemisphere. Experts warn that seasonal temperature changes and community gatherings create high-risk conditions for respiratory infections, prompting urgent calls for early vaccination, particularly among vulnerable populations.
Global Health Agencies Update Influenza Vaccine Formulas
The World Health Organization announced its updated viral strain recommendations for the 2027 Southern Hemisphere influenza season following international consultations. National regulatory bodies and pharmaceutical manufacturers rely on these global updates to produce and license vaccines that closely match circulating viruses.
In Egypt, the Holding Company for Biological Products and Vaccines (VACSERA) confirmed that available doses have been updated to target recent mutations.
Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove said that for nearly 75 years, the World Health Organization’s Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System has demonstrated the immense potential of global solidarity in public health,

Fall Weather Changes and Respiratory Risks Prompt Early Vaccination Calls
Medical professionals across North Africa note that autumn brings a surge in acute respiratory illnesses due to sudden weather fluctuations, school reopenings, and indoor gatherings. Jaafar Heikel reported an increase in acute respiratory infections, especially viral ones, including seasonal flu.
Delaying vaccination until winter runs the risk of exposure before full protection is established. Health ministries stress that immunization should take place before peak virus circulation begins.

Priority Groups and Preventive Measures Across Egypt and Morocco
Health officials also recommend the vaccine for healthcare workers, travelers, and those preparing for Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages.
- Elderly individuals and chronic disease patients facing higher risks of severe complications.
- Healthcare workers and caregivers operating in high-exposure environments.
- Travelers and pilgrims participating in crowded gatherings.
VACSERA and Health Units Distribute Vaccines Across Egypt
Egyptian authorities have distributed doses through public and private channels, with VACSERA making the seasonal vaccine available at its main headquarters in Agouza as well as multiple branches across Cairo, Giza, Alexandria, Kafr El-Sheikh, Assiut, and Beni Suef. Giza’s health directorate also outlined designated medical offices and family health units providing shots for residents, travelers, and pilgrims.
Health specialists recommend consulting physicians promptly upon experiencing symptoms and wearing face masks in public settings if symptomatic to curb community transmission.
