Capital City Fire Rescue (CCFR) has expanded its emergency response capabilities with the addition of two specialized vehicles designed for airport and terrain-specific emergencies. The new equipment, which includes an Airport Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF) truck and a wetland rescue vehicle, was introduced during a community open house on Oct. 10.
The addition of the Oshkosh Striker 6×6 ARFF truck restores the full complement of three ARFF vehicles at the station following the retirement of older units. This follows the arrival of a Rosenbauer Panther 4×4 ARFF truck at the Glacier Fire Station last month. According to the City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ), these vehicles are essential for airport security because they can navigate harsh terrain and carry large water tanks to reach fire, medical, or aircraft emergencies.
Fire Station 3 Open House
The introduction of the vehicles took place at a Fire Station 3 open house held from 10 a.m. to noon on Oct. 10. The event began with a traditional push-in ceremony, a practice CCFR noted dates back to the era of horse-drawn apparatus. The open house offered the public tours, light refreshments, and information on volunteering with the fire department.
New Equipment Boosts Emergency Preparedness in Juneau
CCFR described the new equipment as an important investment in the emergency preparedness of the community and the Juneau International Airport. The department expressed gratitude to the citizens of Juneau, as well as CBJ and Juneau International Airport management, for their support in acquiring the equipment.
