Obituary: James Patrick Warrenburg (1946-2026)

James Patrick Warrenburg, an Indianapolis native who spent four decades as a railroad engineer, died on the morning of Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at the age of 80. According to an obituary published by Legacy.com via the Oakley-Hammond Funeral Home, Warrenburg’s career spanned the evolution of American rail transport in the Midwest, beginning shortly after his 1964 graduation from Scecina Memorial High School.

For roughly 40 years, Warrenburg operated trains out of Avon, Indiana. His tenure began with the New York Central, and he remained in the engineer’s seat as the company transitioned through three distinct corporate identities: Penn Central, Conrail, and finally CSX.

A career defined by the rails

In a household of six children—growing up with four brothers and a sister—Warrenburg learned the importance of punctuality early, a trait that Legacy.com notes served him well throughout his professional life. He spent about 40 years running trains as an engineer out of Avon.

Family and legacy in Indianapolis

Beyond the locomotive, Warrenburg’s personal life was anchored by a 61-year marriage to Genevieve Short. In a touch of familial humor recorded in the obituary, Warrenburg often remarked that Genevieve was the “real engineer” of the family. Together, they raised two daughters, Catherine (Katy Underwood) and Madonna, and saw their family expand to include two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Genevieve; his daughters, Katy and Madonna; his grandchildren, Kailey Underwood and Kevin Wagner; four great-grandchildren; and several siblings, including brothers Neal, Vincent, Brian, and John, and sister Nancy Sissom. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Sr. and Lucy.
