Rhode Island 2026 Election Day: Polls, Ballots, and What to Monitor

Rhode Island voters head to the polls on Tuesday to decide key federal, state, and municipal races, with election officials managing a voting system shaped by historical turnout patterns and city-level administration.

Voters Cast Ballots in Statewide and Local Races

Polls across the Ocean State close at 8 p.m. ET on Tuesday. Voters will cast ballots in high-stakes races spanning the U.S. Senate, U.S. House, and the governorship, alongside local contests including the mayor of Providence.

The ballot also features races for lieutenant governor, attorney general, state treasurer, state Senate, state House, and multiple statewide ballot measures. In the 2022 midterm election, approximately 357,000 total votes were cast in the Rhode Island gubernatorial race, providing a baseline benchmark for this cycle’s engagement.

Early Voting and Result Release Timelines

Advance voting remains a significant factor in Rhode Island elections. Approximately 29% of all ballots in the 2022 gubernatorial race were cast early or by absentee ballot.

Because Rhode Island manages elections at the municipal level, all 39 cities and towns will process and release results independently. According to election tracking plans outlined by the AP, most jurisdictions are slated to release a combined total of early in-person and Election Day votes during their initial updates before publishing mail-in voting results later in the evening.

Speed has characterized recent vote tallies in the state. During the previous general election, the first returns arrived at 8:09 p.m. ET—just nine minutes after polls closed. The state crossed the 50% reporting threshold by 8:34 p.m. ET, and reached 90% reporting shortly after midnight at 12:03 a.m. ET.

Associated Press Declares Winners Using Mathematical Modeling

The Associated Press does not make speculative race projections. A winner is declared only when mathematical modeling confirms that no remaining uncounted ballots allow a trailing candidate to close the gap. Uncalled races will continue to see ongoing coverage of candidate concessions or victory declarations accompanied by clear explanatory notes.

Rhode Island does not conduct automatic recounts, but candidates may request them based on strict margin tiers determined by total turnout:

  • Over 100,000 votes cast: Margin must be under 0.5 percentage points or fewer than 1,500 votes.
  • Contests featuring a total vote count from 20,001 up to 100,000 require a differential under 1 percentage point or a count under 500 votes to trigger a recount.
  • A recount can be requested for any contest with 20,000 or fewer total votes cast if the separation is under 2 percentage points or under 200 votes.

The AP may call a race subject to a potential recount if the mathematical lead proves insurmountable by any subsequent legal challenge or recount procedure.
