Santa Fe Girls Soccer Defeats Eastside 1-0 to Open Season

Santa Fe Defense Holds Firm in 1-0 Season-Opening Win at Eastside

A single first-half goal and a stingy back line changed the narrative for the Santa Fe girls soccer team Tuesday night. The Raiders defeated the Eastside Rams 1-0 to open their regular season, erasing the memory of a difficult 1-16-1 campaign last year.

The turning point arrived midway through the first half when freshman Ansley Jett placed a shot low and to the corner, sneaking the ball past the Eastside goalkeeper. Though Santa Fe generated 22 shots on goal throughout the match, Jett’s strike proved to be the only one that found the back of the net.

Building a Foundation With a Young Roster

That lone goal was all the Raiders needed because their defense completely shut down the opposing attack. Santa Fe’s back line surrendered just two shots all night, both of which were stopped by goalkeeper Delaney Desalvo.

Head coach Shawn Kowatch, entering his second year with the program, is effectively starting over with a remarkably young roster featuring only one senior and four juniors among the 26 players. To fortify that youth, the coaching staff added a defensive assistant specifically to develop the back line’s structure.

“We’ve really been establishing that back line and how we move in that back line, and it’s shown to be phenomenal,” Kowatch said. “We’re really stepping up on that defensive side.”

The defensive stability complemented an otherwise active possession game that kept the ball on the offensive half for the majority of the contest.

Looking Ahead to P.K. Yonge

The season-opening victory provides an immediate emotional lift following a tough weekend at the 22nd Twin Lakes Preseason Classic hosted by Keystone Heights. At that tournament, the Raiders dropped both of their matches, falling 4-0 to Keystone Heights and 1-0 to Williston.

Santa Fe will look to build on Tuesday’s momentum when they travel to play P.K. Yonge at 7 p.m. Thursday. P.K. Yonge enters the matchup with a 1-0 record.
