The Seattle Kraken and Nashville Predators have executed a direct player swap, exchanging two former first-round draft picks who are still fighting to secure permanent footing in the National Hockey League.

The transaction sends center Shane Wright to Nashville in exchange for winger Matthew Wood. Both players are approaching the final stretch of their entry-level contracts and will become restricted free agents at the conclusion of this season.

A Fresh Start in Nashville for Shane Wright

For Wright, the trade closes a chapter in Seattle that never fully met expectations. Hoping he would develop into a foundational piece down the middle, the Kraken took him with the fourth overall pick in the 2022 NHL Draft.

The 22-year-old center has contributed three goals and one assist through 14 games this season. Across 183 career NHL appearances, Wright has accumulated 82 points alongside a +15 rating.

Nashville head coach Andrew Brunette now inherits a young pivot with untapped offensive potential. The Predators sit at 5-4-5 on the year. Wright carries an $886,666 cap hit.

Size and Skill Heading to Seattle

In return, the Kraken add a different profile of forward. Selected 15th overall back in 2023, Wood supplies Seattle with a towering 6-foot-4 stature paired with promising offensive abilities.

The 21-year-old winger has one goal and two assists this season. Over 91 career games, Wood has registered 18 goals and 34 points. Opportunities had grown scarce in Nashville, highlighted by a 13-minute ice-time stint in Saturday’s shootout victory over Tampa Bay where he finished without a point.

Wood carries a cap hit of $950,000. Seattle entered the week with an 8-5-1 record, making an early adjustment rather than waiting for their season to unfold.

Switching franchises gives both Wright and Wood a fresh slate, bringing renewed possibilities alongside heightened expectations to demonstrate they deserve prominent positions across the league.
