Federal agents searched the Washington, D.C.-area home of U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar on Monday as part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation involving immigration documents, prompting political reactions.
Federal law enforcement officers carried out a court-authorized search warrant at the Washington residence of Representative Ilhan Omar early Monday morning. The enforcement action, which began at approximately 6 a.m., was led by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), with participation from the Department of Justice. Both the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Justice participated in the operation.
A Department of Justice spokesperson confirmed that investigators executed a search warrant obtained by the Justice Department in the capital region. While authorities did not immediately disclose specific evidence or charges, a source noted to The New York Times that the search warrant lists potential immigration-related crimes under investigation, including making false statements and immigration fraud, alongside a general conspiracy count. A reporting team observed federal agents removing boxes from the property and placing them into a small truck.
Immigration Fraud Inquiries and Past Allegations Against Representative Omar
The criminal inquiry centers on paperwork submitted when Omar was a child, according to reporting initially published by Fox News. The documents in question were filled out by the congresswoman’s late father. Tom Homan stated that an investigation had been underway for some time and confirmed that a judicial warrant was executed.
Born in Somalia, Omar fled the country’s civil war as a child, spent time in a Kenyan refugee camp, and was later accepted as a refugee in the United States. She was first elected to the House in 2018, representing Minnesota’s fifth congressional district, which encompasses Minneapolis. She also joined The Squad, a group of progressive congresswomen.

If someone violated immigration laws, or was involved in marriage fraud, or any such thing, no one is above the law, whether they’re a member of Congress or not.

Political Fallout and Partisan Reactions Ahead of the Midterms
Coming just 22 days before the November midterm elections, Monday’s raid ignited immediate political division. Democratic leaders sharply criticized the operation, arguing that the timing flouts the long-standing Justice Department policy of avoiding overt investigative steps against political candidates within sixty days of an election.
Representative Omar strongly denied any wrongdoing, releasing a statement characterizing the federal intervention as a campaign of political intimidation.
Republicans, conversely, welcomed the development. Minnesota Representative Tom Emmer voiced support for the enforcement action, declaring that no one is above the law and expressing anticipation for further details regarding the investigation.
