Following a devastating 4-1 home defeat to Italy in the UEFA Nations League on Monday, Turkey manager Vincenzo Montella faced furious demands for his resignation from supporters at the Yuzuncu Yil Ataturk Stadium in Bursa.
First-Half Collapse in Bursa Ignites Supporter Outrage
The match turned in a dizzying twenty-seven minutes. Alessandro Bastoni opened the scoring for Italy in the ninth minute, setting off an immediate defensive unraveling. Davide Fratessi doubled the visitor’s advantage in the 22nd minute. By the time the first half reached its 27th minute, the team had conceded three goals.
According to TRT Sport journalist Fatih Dogan, supporters in the stands began chanting for the departure of both Vincenzo Montella and the leadership of the Turkish Football Federation as soon as the second goal went in. The hostility caught the coaching staff off guard, spilling over into widespread jeers directed at the players even after the opening goal.
Vincenzo Montella Defends His Record Amid Mounting Pressure
The Italian manager pointed to physical and mental fatigue as the root cause of the breakdown. Speaking to Sky Sport Italia, Montella admitted that his side lacked the required sharpness for top-tier international competition.

The first half-hour was certainly something to forget. Playing every three days at this level requires a certain concentration and experience that we currently lack.
Montella faced criticism entering this international window following a group-stage exit at the 2026 World Cup and a 1-0 home loss to France in the opening match of the current Nations League campaign. Despite the escalating protests and second tournament defeat, the manager maintained that stepping down is not currently under consideration.
I believe in the work I have done; even when I received lucrative offers, I did not leave. I still trust our players, and I support them. Just as we got here together, we know how to continue the journey. If there is a possibility of resigning, I will talk to the players, but this is not on our agenda.
Group A Standings and Upcoming Fixtures
Monday’s result leaves Turkey at the bottom of Group A after dropping their opening two fixtures. The team previously opened group play with a 1-0 defeat against France, while Italy rebounded from a 2-0 loss to Belgium.
Turkey travels to face Belgium on October 2, before playing a return fixture against Italy three days later.
