Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company reported a record third-quarter net profit of NT$763.1 billion on October 15, 2026, marking its sixth consecutive quarter of record earnings driven by surging global demand for artificial intelligence chips and advanced manufacturing nodes.

Net Profit Surges 68.7% to Beat Analyst Estimates

The world’s largest contract chipmaker posted a 68.7% surge in net profit for the July–September period compared to a year earlier, easily clearing the NT$746.34 billion net income expected by analysts in LSEG SmartEstimates. Operating margin reached 58.7%, outpacing the company’s prior guidance ceiling of 58% and underlining the intense pricing power the chipmaker commands as technology firms compete for scarce fabrication capacity.

Consolidated revenue climbed to NT$1.494 trillion ($46.72 billion), representing a 50.9% increase from the same period last year. On a sequential basis, revenue rose 17.6% from the second quarter. The results mark the eleventh straight quarter of profit growth for the Taipei-listed giant, which remains an essential supplier to leading technology designers including Apple and Nvidia.

Consolidated revenue of NT$1,494.24 billion, net income of NT$763.06 billion, and diluted earnings per share of NT$29.43 (US$4.60 per ADR unit) were officially announced by TSMC (TWSE: 2330, NYSE: TSM) for the third quarter ended September 30, 2026. These figures represent a 50.9% year-over-year revenue increase, while net income and diluted earnings per share both grew by 68.7%. Compared with the second quarter of 2026, revenue increased by 17.6% and net income rose by 8.0%, all prepared in accordance with TIFRS on a consolidated basis. In US dollar terms, third-quarter revenue reached $46.72 billion, marking a 41.2% year-over-year increase and a 16.2% sequential rise. The company’s gross margin landed at 66.4%, with an operating margin of 58.7% and a net profit margin of 51.1%. Free cash flow climbed to NT$476.56 billion in the third quarter, jumping from NT$139.38 billion during the same period a year earlier. The TSMC board approved a NT$7.00 cash dividend for the second quarter.

Ahead of the official release, market activity on October 14, 2026, pointed to an expected price movement of nearly 4% in Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd TSM options. Observers noted that the chipmaker’s monthly revenue previews had already signaled an exceptionally strong period, with Wall Street analysts forecasting third-quarter revenue growth of 47% and fourth-quarter growth of 54%. TSM’s overall GF Score stands at 98 out of 100, reflecting strong marks across financial strength, profitability, growth, and momentum. Nevertheless, GuruFocus proprietary GF Value metric estimates that the stock is modestly overvalued by about 14.7%, calculating an intrinsic value estimate of $375.78 compared to recent market prices.

High-Performance Computing and Advanced Nodes Dominate Production

High-performance computing anchored the quarterly figures, accounting for 68% of total revenue. Smartphones followed at 21%, while the automotive sector emerged as the fastest-growing segment with a 23% quarter-over-quarter expansion.

Advanced fabrication technologies — defined by the manufacturer as 7-nanometer nodes and below — accounted for 79% of total wafer revenue during the quarter.

  • 3-nanometer chips generated 33% of revenue, leading all node categories.
  • 5-nanometer chips contributed 28% of total wafer sales.
  • 7-nanometer chips accounted for 10% of production.
  • 2-nanometer chips represented 8% of wafer revenue as the company prepares for broader commercial scaling.

Global Expansion and Margin Pressures Ahead of 2027

Even as earnings hit record highs, management has cautioned that aggressive capital expenditures and overseas foundry expansion will weigh on near-term profitability. Ramping up 2-nanometer production is expected to dilute gross margins by 3 to 4 percentage points, with third-quarter gross margin landing at 66.4%.

The company’s capital budget for the year stands between $60 billion and $64 billion, fueled by massive infrastructure commitments including a $265 billion total planned investment in Arizona. To ease domestic bottlenecks in the United States, GlobalFoundries reached a five-year, $2 billion manufacturing agreement on October 8 to produce silicon interposers for the CoWoS advanced packaging supply chain at its Malta, New York, facility, with volume production expected to ramp up in the first half of 2028.

Simply Wall St community narrative

Despite geopolitical risks, supply chain constraints, and heavy capital outlays, executive leadership has indicated that robust infrastructure demand from artificial intelligence customers is projected to persist all the way to probably 2029, 2030.

Reporting by Wen-Yee Lee and Ben Blanchard for Reuters detailed how the record earnings arrived as the sector grew enthusiastic, noting that ASML reported customers already placing orders for 2029 and 2030. Concurrently, broader financial markets experienced turbulence, with Taipei-listed shares closing down 2% on Thursday following earlier Federal Reserve interest rate announcements and a regional chip sell-off triggered by memory claims involving China’s CXMT and SK Hynix. On the company’s prior earnings calls, CEO C.C. Wei noted that leading-edge logic takes more than five years to develop, prepare for capacity, and successfully ramp up. Analysts tracked by LSEG SmartEstimates continue to project upside targets for the stock, while market participants weigh ongoing capital expenditures against accelerating artificial intelligence hardware deployment.
