Ballymullen Barracks Houses Asylum Seekers Since 2024
The Department of Integration has used the former army barracks at Ballymullen to house asylum seekers since May 2024. Accommodation for up to 50 single male international protection applicants is designated at the property, which functions under a one-year licence agreement with the Department of Defence.

Reporting by the Irish Mirror notes that critical incidents recorded across IPAS centres nationwide have risen over the past five years, moving from 14 incidents in 2021 to 55 in 2024, 62 in 2025, and 27 in the first five months of this year, alongside a significant overall increase in the accommodation population.
When the Ballymullen facility opened for asylum seekers in 2024, demonstrations took place outside the gates. Following Saturday’s incident, the Mayor of Tralee urged residents to remain vigilant but cautioned against spreading unnecessary hate, stating that the local community is close-knit and must support one another through the tragedy.
