Apple Maps is expanding its electric vehicle features to include real-time charging availability and preferred network selection starting in 2023, while also maintaining a long-running timeline of platform additions from business directories to web availability.
Electric Vehicle Routing and Real-Time Charging Availability
Apple Maps first introduced electric vehicle routing back in June 2020 to help drivers find compatible charging stations along their routes, as reported by TechCrunch. That initial rollout laid the groundwork for subsequent expansions targeted specifically at EV owners navigating long-distance trips or daily commutes.
By June 2023, the feature set expanded further. According to 9to5Mac, Apple Maps gained the ability to show real-time charging availability information alongside options that let drivers choose a preferred network.
Commercial Offerings and Business Directory Expansion
Beyond transportation updates, Apple has systematically built out its commercial infrastructure within the mapping application. In January 2023, Sarah Perez reported on the launch of Apple Business Connect to provide more detailed business listings. Commercial features continued to evolve over the following years, with announcements regarding upcoming advertisements in the application reported by Sarah Perez in March 2026, Lucas Ropek in March 2023, and Anthony Ha in October 2025, alongside Sarah Perez’s July 2026 report that Apple bans home services from its upcoming Maps ads.
