A NASA spacecraft orbiting the moon has captured detailed before-and-after images of a new impact crater left when a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket booster crashed into the lunar surface. The defunct upper stage of the Falcon 9 rocket smashed uncontrolled into the moon on Aug. 5 at an estimated 5,400 mph, according to Nbcnews. The booster, measuring roughly 45 feet long and 12 feet wide, had launched in January 2025 to carry lunar landers into space before remaining adrift in orbit.

The impact created a fresh crater measuring about 60 feet across and less than 10 feet deep, according to scientific measurements of the shadows and features captured by NASA‘s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. Flight controllers had to tilt the spacecraft so its Narrow-Angle Camera could point toward the impact scene while flying 60 miles above the lunar surface at 1 mile per second. Because the orbiter circles the moon from pole to pole every two hours while the moon rotates beneath it, it took six days of waiting for the orbital path to align before the orbiter could photograph the site.
Characteristics of the Lunar Impact Site
The newly released images reveal distinct bright and dark rays stretching outward from the crater rim like butterfly wings, as reported by CBS News. Scientists explained that the darker streaks consist of surface dust and rocks that were altered over a long period by solar wind, galactic cosmic rays, and micrometeorite impacts, and were excavated from a depth of about 1.5 feet. The brighter streaks near the crater rim comprise fresher material and rocks excavated from deeper underground.

Global coordination allowed researchers to track the trajectory and locate the impact site along the western edge of the moon’s sunlit side. Independent astronomers first identified the trajectory using publicly available data, which NASA’s Center for Near Earth Object Studies subsequently verified and refined. South Korea’s Korea Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter, known as Danuri, flew over the site shortly after the collision and snapped early photos using its high-resolution LUTI camera before passing its coordinates to the NASA team.

The uncontrolled collision represents only the second known instance of a human-made rocket accidentally hitting the lunar surface. In 2022, a spent stage from a Chinese rocket crashed into the far side of the moon, though China denied involvement. Julianna Scheiman, director of human spaceflight and NASA science at SpaceX, explained at a news conference that a combination of solar activity and gravity forces pushed the spacecraft’s trajectory toward the lunar surface after the landers separated, noting that the company actively works to ensure space safety and proper hardware disposal.

The rare cosmic collision sparked fresh discussions regarding space sustainability as various nations pursue lunar exploration and infrastructure development. Ground-based instruments also observed the event; a telescope at the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope in Chile detected a debris plume and observed sodium and lithium gases emanating from the site for several minutes following the impact.
