A 30-year-old man on federal parole was shot in the groin and thigh by an NYPD lieutenant in Brooklyn on Tuesday afternoon. The shooting occurred after a violent chain of events began with an alleged family assault on New Lots Avenue and an attack on a mental health worker in Downtown Brooklyn.
An ordinary Tuesday afternoon in Brooklyn quickly escalated into a multi-neighborhood trail of violence involving family assault, a severely injured mental health worker, and an armed confrontation with police on New Lots Avenue. According to police, the 30-year-old suspect is currently on parole for a federal crime and is expected to survive the gunshot wounds inflicted by law enforcement.
From New Lots Avenue to Downtown Brooklyn
From there, detectives believe the suspect traveled to 26 Court Street in Downtown Brooklyn. At that location, authorities report he viscously beat a 58-year-old female mental health worker.

Officers with the 84th Precinct responded to the suspect’s residence and coordinated with officers in the 75th Precinct. When a lieutenant approached the 30-year-old man as he sat on the front steps at New Lots Avenue, the situation turned armed.
According to police accounts, the suspect stood up and grabbed two distinct weapons.
The suspect gets up and as he gets up, he grabs two knives. One was a machete rather large machete about 20 inches. The other one was a large butcher knife and he has a knife in each hand and he starts advancing on the lieutenant.
Despite multiple commands from the lieutenant to put the knives down, the suspect continued to advance. The lieutenant discharged two rounds from his weapon, striking the suspect in the groin and thigh area.
Aftermath and Community Impact
Emergency measures and medical checks followed the shooting. The wounded suspect is expected to survive his injuries. Additionally, a large knife preliminarily described as a machete was recovered at the scene.
The physical toll extended beyond the suspect. Two police officers were transported to Jamaica Medical Center to be checked out after experiencing ringing in their ears from the gunfire.
