For former Premier League manager Sean Dyche, Chelsea’s interest in Welbeck indicates that either the club or new manager Xabi Alonso has recognized an urgent need for seasoned professionalism in the dressing room. Dyche noted that the club’s earlier failed pursuit of Granit Xhaka gives further weight to that theory, following attempts to sign the 33-year-old midfielder from Sunderland before the Black Cats refused to sell the Switzerland captain.

Sean Dyche stated via talkSPORT that, looking at the club’s model over the last few years, it seemed to consist of constantly buying young players with not very much depth in their Premier League knowledge, noting that Granit Xhaka had been heavily linked with a move that ultimately did not quite go through.

Dyche added that bringing in a veteran like Welbeck reflects that old-school sort of thinking where respected professionals elevate team culture and standards.

Welbeck has been at Brighton since October 2020, when he joined the club as a free agent following his release from Watford after his contract was terminated by mutual consent on October 6. Across 201 appearances in all competitions for Brighton, the veteran striker has scored over 50 goals. He enjoyed the most productive goalscoring return of his career last season, netting 13 times in 37 league fixtures.

That impressive tally marked the third-most goals among English strikers in the Premier League, trailing only Ollie Watkins and Dominic Calvert-Lewin. It also fueled widespread discussion over whether Welbeck deserved a place in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the World Cup, with former Brighton teammate Adam Lallana believing the striker’s experience would have proved valuable on the world stage before Tuchel ultimately opted for Harry Kane, Watkins and Ivan Toney.

Graham Potter, Brighton manager, remarked that he would add to their attacking threat and expressed that they were thrilled to add another player of his experience and quality.
