The historic Jodrell Bank Observatory, home to Britain’s largest telescope for nearly seven decades, is facing imminent closure after losing its annual funding stream. The UK Research and Innovation agency announced the funding withdrawal as part of broader fiscal tightening across physics, nuclear, and astronomy research over the next four years.
The Lovell Telescope and Decades of Scientific Discovery
Established on the Cheshire plain in 1945 by radio astronomer Bernard Lovell, the observatory has pioneered the study of distant galaxies and cosmic phenomena. At its heart stands the iconic 250ft-wide Lovell Telescope, recognized as the third-largest steerable radio telescope in the world. Beyond its civilian astronomical breakthroughs, the site played a critical role during the Cold War by monitoring Soviet missiles and supporting the United States space race efforts.
Those contributions earned the observatory Unesco World Heritage status in 2019. Today, the facility operates alongside a wider network of instruments, including the Multi-Element Radio Linked Interferometer Network, which links dishes across Britain with separations of up to 217 kilometers.
Budget Pressures and Agency Cuts
The funding body responsible for the decision operates on an annual budget of just under £10 billion. According to agency officials, escalating research costs and laboratory expenses forced difficult choices to secure a sustainable financial position.
Prof Michele Dougherty, executive chair at UKRI, stated that after listening to the community they had protected core discovery research, though the situation required tough but necessary decisions that were never easy, expressing the belief that they had made the right choices to bring about a sustainable financial position by 2029/30.
To trim its overall commitments, the UKRI is implementing 2.7% reductions across astronomy, nuclear, and particle physics over the next four years. The agency plans to terminate the observatory’s £2.8 million yearly budget, placing 28 jobs directly at risk while potentially impacting the research work of roughly 3,000 scientists.
Immediate Backlash from the Scientific Community
The announcement triggered swift and sharp condemnation from prominent researchers, trade unions, and academic leaders across the United Kingdom. Critics argue that dismantling a foundational institution undermines the nation’s broader ambitions to remain a global science superpower.

Prof Brian Cox, professor of particle physics at the University of Manchester, noted that the damage to the UK’s science base had already been substantial and expressed astonishment that UKRI was still ploughing ahead instead of working with the Burnham government to find a solution.
Staff members and administrators at the site described themselves as devastated by the timeline. Observatory leadership confirmed plans to challenge the ruling while urgently seeking alternative philanthropic or government support to keep the Lovell Telescope functioning.
Prof Simon Garrington, associate director of the Jodrell Bank Observatory, explained that it was not just because of the fantastic science conducted there, but also because Jodrell Bank and its telescope network had served as a national capability for nearly 70 years and a beacon for science in the north-west, attracting young people into science and engineering careers.
Broader Impacts on UK Physics and Astronomy
The cuts at Jodrell Bank form part of a wider retrenchment affecting several premier international projects. British researchers will withdraw from ongoing research at the James Clark Maxwell Telescope in Hawaii, which images supermassive black holes. Funding has also been pulled from UK involvement in two instruments destined for the Extremely Large Telescope in Chile, as well as several scheduled upgrades for experiments at the Large Hadron Collider.
Representing affected personnel, Sue Ferns, deputy general secretary of the Prospect trade union, characterized the closure as a tragedy that directly undermines national research capabilities. Paul Howarth, president of the Institute of Physics, urged the government to intervene and review the decisions before long-term damage becomes irreversible.
Without a last-minute injection of alternative capital, all scientific observations at the site are scheduled to cease entirely on April 1, 2028.
