At least one gunshot was fired outside the U.S. Consulate in downtown Toronto early Monday, marking the second time this year the diplomatic mission has been targeted by gunfire. No injuries were reported, and police are searching for a white sedan that fled the scene at high speed.

The incident unfolded around 04:45 local time on University Avenue, alerting officers stationed outside the diplomatic outpost. According to police officers alerted by the sound of a gunshot, evidence of a weapon being fired was recovered at the scene. Investigators later retrieved a single shell casing and noted minor damage to the building’s exterior facade.

At least two individuals were inside the consulate when the shot rang out, but Toronto Police Deputy Chief Frank Barredo noted that the facility is very heavily fortified and occupants likely did not hear the gunfire.

High-Speed Pursuit and the Search for the White Sedan

Following the blast, a white Honda Accord with no license plates was spotted speeding away from the area. Officers briefly pursued the vehicle before calling off the high-speed chase due to safety risks posed by the suspect’s speed and a lack of aerial support.

Law enforcement agencies, including the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and international partners, are assisting with the active investigation. Supt Jonathan Ko with the RCMP called it another troubling incident, while Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow described the event as brazen.

Chow added that she is working with authorities to stop the illegal flow of guns into the city. A U.S. Department of State spokesperson said the United States is working closely with Canadian authorities following the incident, expressing appreciation for ongoing law enforcement cooperation to keep the consulate safe. While the embassy and consulates in Canada remain open and operating normally, some routine consular services in Toronto are being rescheduled.

Echoes of a March Attack and Broader Gun Violence Concerns

Monday’s shooting follows a previous attack on March 10, when multiple shots were fired at the same consular building. Police have been stationed outside the consulate since March.

In June, investigators announced arrests related to the March shooting, connecting it to a broader network. Constable Marc Pinizzotto, 43, was killed during a June gun battle with suspects while police investigated the earlier consulate attack. Nicholas Bennett, 19, subsequently faced first-degree murder charges in connection with his death, while teenage suspects Sheldon Tracy-Stewart and Zara Jabbi were linked to the March consulate shooting.

Investigators have pointed to multi-layered criminal networks paying young individuals to carry out shootings at high-profile locations across the city. Over the weekend, two Jewish-owned bakeries were also targeted by gunfire and vandalism. While police stated there is currently nothing formally linking the bakery attacks to the consulate shooting, authorities have not ruled out a potential connection.

Political Condemnation and Next Steps in the Investigation

Senior Canadian officials expressed strong condemnation over the recurring violence.

Doug Ford, Ontario Premier, via BBC stated that he was totally disgusted by the shootings and vandalism that took place in Toronto over the last few days, including at two Jewish-owned businesses over the weekend and near the U.S.

Deputy Chief Barredo emphasized that investigators have not yet specified a motive for Monday’s shooting, nor have they confirmed any direct link to an international plot or prior suspects.

Police are urging anyone in the vicinity of the consulate with dashcam footage, or anyone who noticed suspicious activity between 4:30 a.m. and 5:00 a.m., to contact the Toronto Police Service at 416-808-2222.
