UK Study Links Persistent Financial Stress to Faster Brain Aging

A new United Kingdom study reveals that persistent financial stress is linked to faster brain aging and cognitive decline later in life. Researchers found that individuals plagued by money worries performed worse on tests at age 53 and showed greater brain shrinkage by ages 69 to 71, with especially pronounced effects among men.

Continually worrying about money may take a heavy biological toll, according to new research published on a Thursday. The study tracked nearly 2,800 people who completed questionnaires throughout their lifetimes as part of a national study in the United Kingdom. These participants are now in their early 80s, offering researchers a decades-long look at how prolonged economic hardship impacts neurological health as people age.

The research uncovered clear performance gaps among participants facing chronic financial strain. Study participants who reported being plagued by financial stress performed worse on cognitive tests administered when they were 53 years old. The damage did not stop at middle-age test scores.

Participants who experienced ongoing financial stress and underwent brain scans also showed more brain shrinkage and overall worse brain health by ages 69 to 71. Interestingly, the researchers observed that the decline on memory tests after age 53 was slower. They surmised that this might be because a large amount of cognitive damage had already been done by that point.

The Pronounced Impact on Men Born in 1946

The link between financial stress and a decline in brain health later in life was especially pronounced in men, who also did worse on cognitive tests when carrying persistent financial worries. While the study could not definitively explain why men experienced worse overall brain health than women, the researchers offered several plausible theories based on demographic norms.

According to the researchers, men born in 1946—the birth year of the people included in the study—were more likely than women of that age to serve as the main providers of household income and carry a heavier burden regarding financial stress. Additionally, men of that era may have been more likely to smoke, drink, and engage in other unhealthy behaviors.

Accumulated Hardship Versus Occasional Adversity

A major strength of the study lies in its duration, which allowed investigators to separate long-term hardship from temporary money troubles.

Jacques Wels of University College London explained that most studies on cognitive aging look at financial hardship at only a single point in time, whereas their study using several decades of data allows them to see that it is the accumulation of hardship over many years that is linked to the worst cognitive health outcomes, rather than occasional episodes of adversity.

Crucially, these results remained consistent even when researchers controlled for other potential confounding factors, including education level, childhood cognition, and childhood disadvantage. The researchers also noted that having overwhelming financial stress on an ongoing basis may leave less room for other cognitive tasks, helping explain lower performance. Furthermore, the chronic stress associated with persistent money worries may increase inflammation, which can lead to faster brain aging.

Association Versus Direct Causation in UK Data

Despite the robust dataset drawn from nearly 2,800 people who completed questionnaires throughout their lifetimes, the research stops short of proving a direct cause-and-effect relationship. The study found only an association between chronic financial stress and faster brain aging, meaning it did not establish that financial insecurity and worries directly caused cognitive decline.
