Astronomers analyzing mini-Neptune exoplanets report that abundant water may sink deep beneath planetary atmospheres where even the James Webb Space Telescope cannot detect it.
Yet the most common planetary category discovered so far—worlds slightly smaller than Neptune known as mini-Neptunes or sub-Neptunes—has no equivalent in our own cosmic backyard. Because these planets lack a local benchmark, researchers rely heavily on complex computer simulations to understand their interiors and compositions, balancing telescopic data against the laws of physics and chemistry.
How Distant Mini-Neptunes Hide Deep Reservoirs of Water
A new study led by scientists at the University of Chicago and accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal examines a vast, mysterious class of worlds known as sub-Neptunes. These planets are too dense to qualify as gas giants like Jupiter, yet too light to be rocky bodies like Earth. Instead, they likely consist of varying mixtures of rock, gas, and water.
Until recently, working assumptions held that warm mini-Neptune atmospheres were thoroughly mixed—resembling a well-shaken cocktail—meaning atmospheric composition offered a reliable window into deeper layers. However, researchers running detailed simulations found that water can behave in complex ways depending on temperature, pressure, and the exact mixture of elements. In cooler atmospheres or on water-rich worlds, heavy water can sink far below lighter hydrogen layers, placing it completely out of view of modern observatories.

To test how planetary interiors function, the research team focused on TOI-270 d, which circles a star in the constellation Pictor. NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope previously detected hydrogen, methane, and carbon dioxide in the planet’s atmosphere—readings that should theoretically accompany abundant water.
Water under such heavy atmospheric pressure can exist in extreme phases, including as a supercritical fluid. But confirming whether water is actively hidden beneath a lighter gas envelope remains beyond current observational limits. Study co-author Prof. Eliza Kempton noted that with current techniques, we don’t yet have the capacity to confirm or rule out which category planets like TOI-270 d ultimately fall into, leaving them in a persistent gray area.

Researchers emphasize that while these specific worlds are unlikely to harbor life due to crushing pressures and thick, hot envelopes, refining models of how water and hydrogen interact is essential for interpreting incoming data from advanced telescopes.

After initially topping the previous record by just one dollar on June 26, average asking prices crept up an additional $154 over four days. The final June average was $2,421, or 4.9%, higher than the same day a year prior. Market segments experienced uneven shifts: compact sedans recorded the largest increase, with average prices jumping by $2,869, or 12%, from the end of June 2025. Automotive News notes this surge likely reflects buyers seeking lower-cost options and rising demand that has prompted Detroit automakers to consider bringing sedans back into production lines.
Divergent Price Trends Across Vehicle Segments
Price movements varied significantly by model and category. Five segments saw average price decreases, led by convertibles dropping 9.8% and minivans falling 3.2%. Among individual nameplates, redesigned popular models saw sharp increases, with the Kia Telluride rising 16.4% and Toyota RAV4 prices up 15.7% over the previous year. Conversely, Hyundai Ioniq 5 prices fell by 17%, and Jeep Wrangler prices dropped 4%.

As the automotive sector navigates high transaction costs and shifting consumer preferences, researchers across both planetary science and domestic economics continue to parse complex data to separate surface readings from what lies hidden underneath.
