Jewish settlers besieged Palestinian homes in the occupied West Bank village of Qusra, prompting a sharp condemnation from U.S. The Israeli military deployed additional troops after initial enforcement efforts failed to clear the defiant group.
The Qusra Village Blockade and the Defiant Settler Camp
The blockade began on a Sunday when a group of settlers established a makeshift tent near houses in the Palestinian village of Qusra, situated just south of Nablus in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. The encampment immediately choked off access to essential supplies for the families inside. Aisha Hassan told nbcnews.com on the edge of her village that her family home had been surrounded and attacked for days by violent Jewish settlers. Inside one of the blockaded houses, Qusai Abu Rida described the desperate conditions enforced by the blockade.
Abu Rida added that he had managed to secure electricity only thanks to solar panels. By Wednesday morning, the Israeli military declared the area a closed military zone
and removed the settlers’ tent. However, an AFP photographer at the scene observed that the military had left by mid-afternoon. Although the tent was gone, the settlers remained at the site equipped with chairs and blankets.
Military Intervention and Escalating Official Condemnation
The Israeli military condemned the actions, stating that it had received reports of settlers entering and taking control of Palestinian homes and land in the area. In an official statement, the military declared, This is illegal, reprehensible and unacceptable activity that harms the residents of the areas and disrupts their daily lives,
while also confirming that disciplinary action would be taken against security personnel filmed at the site days earlier. Following the initial withdrawal where settlers persisted, the military announced late Wednesday that it would send an additional infantry battalion and place more soldiers on standby.
The chief of the general staff directed that efforts to strengthen order and operational control in the area continue, as well as efforts to prevent further serious incidents, according to the military statement. International condemnation followed swiftly. U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee on Thursday branded the group besieging the village, which included the home of an American Palestinian family, as Israeli terrorists.
Broader West Bank Tensions and Human Toll
The standoff in Qusra unfolds against a backdrop of prolonged and escalating violence in the West Bank. Violence by Israeli settlers towards Palestinians in the territory has persisted for years, often with little or no legal consequence, though recent months have seen a surge in attacks. More than 500,000 Israelis live in settlements across the Palestinian territory, which are illegal under international law, among some three million Palestinians. Israel has occupied the West Bank since 1967.
According to an AFP tally based on data from the Palestinian health ministry, Israeli soldiers or settlers have killed at least 1,097 Palestinians in the West Bank, including both militants and civilians, since the start of the Gaza war in October 2023. In contrast, Israeli figures show that at least 48 Israelis, including civilians and security personnel, have been killed in Palestinian attacks or during Israeli military operations during the same period.
