More than 100 crop scouts departed from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Columbus, Ohio, to sample two drastically different agricultural realities. In contrast, the western leg samples crops that endured summer dryness and heat in the Plains and the northwestern Corn Belt.

Agronomists have also noted pollination issues in the eastern and southeastern Corn Belt, particularly in fields planted around mid-April, where intense rains disrupted the silking process. Disease pressures have shifted from the southern rust seen on last year’s tour to widespread reports of tar spot and bacterial leaf streak.
Yield Projections and USDA Benchmarks at Odds
The tour arrives on the heels of the USDA’s August 12 Crop Production report, which pegged the national corn yield at 180.7 bushels per acre on 88.6 million harvested acres, resulting in a 16.013-billion-bushel crop. That figure represents a 2.3-bushel cut from the July estimate and stands 5.8 bushels below last year’s record. Soybeans were estimated at 52.7 bushels per acre for the largest U.S. soybean crop on record of 4.519 billion bu.

However, private models point to further tension in the fields. DTN’s Digital Yield Tour, a machine-learning model utilizing satellite and weather data from an August 1 snapshot, projected national corn yields at 178.5 bushels per acre—falling below the USDA benchmark in six of the seven tour states, including every state on the eastern leg. Meanwhile, the USDA rated the U.S. corn crop at 61% good-to-excellent, down 11 points from a year ago, though state-level ratings reflect wide disparities, ranging from 78% in Iowa down to 45% in South Dakota.
Central Tension: Why This Week’s Ear Counts Tell Only Half the Story
While scouts tally ear populations and row counts this week, analysts caution that the visual damage from recent weekend storms has yet to manifest fully in the physical samples.
