Investors defrauded of more than £1m by an 86-year-old former NASA scientist running illegal trading schemes will recover almost all their funds after the Financial Conduct Authority secured a £655,951 confiscation order at Southwark Crown Court on Monday.
From Manned Mars Exploration to Unlicensed Trading Schemes
John Burford held a PhD in physics from the University of Toronto and worked for NASA as part of its manned Mars exploration team based in Washington D.C. before transitioning into finance, according to publisher biography records. Between 2016 and 2021, he operated a Mansfield-based firm named Financial Trading Strategies. Despite lacking authorisation, Burford offered trade alerts and investment opportunities in managed funds to roughly 100 investors.
Westminster Magistrates’ Court heard that the illegal schemes generated over £1m through his illegal investment schemes, though Burford traded only £760,000 of that total, losing most of it. Court proceedings revealed that substantial sums sent by trusting investors were diverted to acquire a house and fund personal expenses rather than entering the markets.
Guilty Pleas and the Financial Conduct Authority Confiscation Order
Burford pleaded guilty to multiple offences last year and received a two-year prison sentence in 2025. The regulatory enforcement concluded on Monday at Southwark Crown Court when the 86-year-old faced a judge for financial recovery.
“Mr Burford scammed investors to fund his own lavish lifestyle.”

Steve Smart, executive director of enforcement and market oversight at the FCA, added that clawing back stolen money from fraudsters sends an unmistakable signal about the consequences of financial crime.
Recovery Metrics and Return of Funds to Victims
The confiscation order directs Burford to surrender £655,951.40, representing the total value of assets the court determined could still be seized. According to the Financial Conduct Authority, these funds will be returned directly to the victims.
When combined with earlier voluntary payments made by Burford, this payout ensures that approximately 99% of the capital originally invested by the roughly 70 known victims will be recovered.
