Egyptian star Mohammad Ramadan has kicked off filming for his upcoming television series Ashmawy, slated for broadcast during the Ramadan 2027 drama season. The production launches following a wave of high-profile cast and crew departures that have reshaped the project ahead of its studio debut in Cairo.
Ramadan Begins Filming Ashmawy in Cairo
Cameras rolled on the first day of shooting for Ashmawy at a studio in Giza, setting in motion an ambitious 30-episode drama backed by producer Sadek El-Sabahy and broadcast via MBC.
The opening schedule brought together prominent cast members for their initial scenes, with wider studio and street photography across Cairo slated to expand later in the week.
The creative vision for the project is guided by director Peter Mimi, who oversees the production following initial changes in the writers’ room.

This television venture marks Ramadan’s return to the Ramadan drama marathon following a three-season hiatus that began after his major commercial success with the series Jaafar El Omda in 2023.
Ramadan shared a glimpse of his physical transformation for the role on social media, posting an image in character with a shaved head alongside the caption, Bism Allah Ashmawy is here, Ramadan gathers us

Cast Departures Precede Studio Debut
Before reaching the studio, the production faced a sequence of high-profile departures and creative adjustments.
The initial writing duties shifted when Ahmed Mourad stepped down from completing the script, passing the work to Mohammad Ismail Amin while director Peter Mimi remained at the helm.
Cast rosters experienced similar instability.
Separate negotiations with Khaled El Sawy also lapsed over technical and financial specifics tied to his proposed role.
The most widely discussed transition involved Mai Omar, who bowed out of Ashmawy after her shooting schedule conflicted directly with preparations for her own Ramadan series, Halima Gibran.

Following Omar’s exit, Yosra El Lozy stepped in to assume the leading female role, officially joining the cast opposite Ramadan after turning down a part in Omar’s competing project.
Ramadan Stars as Executioner Facing Family Crisis
Within the series narrative, Ramadan portrays a prison executioner named Khalifa who balances a quiet domestic life raising three daughters with the heavy demands of his state position.
That routine shatters when a family member becomes entangled in a complex criminal case, plunging the protagonist into an intense domestic and ethical crisis.
The supporting lineup features veteran actress Essad Younis alongside Bassem Samra, Entesar, Waleed Fawaz, Mohamed Abdel Hafez, and Essam El Saka, with young actress Jessica Hossam Din appearing as Khalifa’s daughter.
