Paramount Pictures has scheduled filmmaker Parker Finn’s upcoming supernatural thriller Possession,
starring Callum Turner and Margaret Qualley, for a wide theatrical release on June 11, 2027. The high-profile project, a remake of Andrzej Żuławski’s 1981 cult classic, is slated to open opposite Universal Pictures’ live-action How to Train Your Dragon 2.
Parker Finn’s Summer Blockbuster Shift at Paramount
Paramount Pictures is positioning the remake of the 1981 cult horror film Possession not as a traditional autumn thriller or Halloween release, but as a major summer tentpole. The studio has slated the project for June 11, 2027, signaling significant confidence in director Parker Finn following his commercial success with the Smile
franchise.
The original 1981 supernatural thriller directed by Andrzej Żuławski was never a mainstream box office hit, instead earning its enduring reputation through underground fandom and cult status in arthouse genre cinema. By slotting the reimagining into mid-June, Paramount is pairing rising star talent with high-concept horror in a direct counter-programming move against family-friendly summer fare.
Star-Studded Cast and Behind-the-Scenes Production Team
Callum Turner and Margaret Qualley will lead the cast as the troubled couple at the center of the narrative. In Parker Finn’s new take on the story, Turner plays a spy whose wife begins exhibiting alarming, violent behavior after requesting a divorce. They are joined by an ensemble cast featuring Diego Calva, Madeline Brewer, Emory Cohen, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, and Paul Dano.
Behind the camera, Finn penned the script based on Żuławski’s original screenplay. Production duties are shared by Finn and Jonathan Fass through their Bad Feeling banner, alongside Roy Lee and Andrew Childs representing Vertigo. Notably, Robert Pattinson also serves as a producer on the feature, following a competitive bidding war in 2024 that saw multiple studios vie for the package.
Box Office Context and the 1981 Original’s Legacy
The project arrives as a major milestone for Finn, whose feature directorial debut was 2022’s Smile, a breakout horror hit for Paramount that grossed $217 million globally on a $17 million budget. Following the success of that film and its sequel, Finn’s two Smile
movies have combined to gross $345 million at the box office, launching him firmly into mainstream horror prominence.

The source material remains a towering achievement in international genre history. The original Cold War-era West Berlin production starred Isabelle Adjani and Sam Neill as a married couple whose relationship collapses into supernatural terror, a performance that earned Adjani the Best Actress prize at the Cannes Film Festival.
A Crowded Mid-June 2027 Theatrical Slate
Paramount’s scheduling places Possession
directly into a congested summer release window. The film will open on the same weekend as Universal Pictures’ live-action How to Train Your Dragon 2,
creating a stark demographic split at the box office.

The surrounding weeks offer similarly dense studio competition. Columbia Pictures is set to release the horror film Skeletons,
starring Brie Larson, one week prior on June 4, 2027, alongside Lionsgate’s John Rambo.
One week later, on June 18, 2027, Columbia will return with the long-anticipated animated threequel Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse,
cementing a high-stakes summer schedule for major distributors.
