Quentin Tarantino’s debut stage play, The Popinjay Cavalier,
will premiere at London’s Phoenix Theatre on March 18, 2027, with Sacha Baron Cohen starring in the lead role. The production, a swashbuckling comedy set in 1830s Europe, begins previews on February 23 and is currently scheduled to run through June 13, 2027.
A Directorial Debut on the West End
After decades of cinematic success, Quentin Tarantino is officially transitioning to the stage. Produced by Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sonia Friedman Productions, The Popinjay Cavalier
marks the filmmaker’s first work written specifically for the stage, which he will also direct. The project was initially revealed by the director in 2025 on the Church of Tarantino podcast, where he confirmed the script was finished. Tarantino, 63, has spent his career as an award-winning filmmaker, having earned two Academy Awards, two Baftas, and four Golden Globes. His storied filmography includes Reservoir Dogs—his 1992 directorial debut—as well as Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, the Kill Bill volumes, Death Proof, Inglourious Basterds, Django Unchained, The Hateful Eight, and Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood. Beyond his directing accolades, he has also been nominated for an Emmy and five Grammys.
The play is described as a rambunctious comedy of deception and disguise inspired by the grand swashbuckling epics of stage and screen.
Drawing on the classic swashbuckler genre of old Hollywood, the production incorporates elements from the writings of George Bruce, Ernst Vajda, and Jesse Lasky Jr. The creative team supporting Tarantino includes scenic and costume designer Tom Pye, lighting designer Natasha Chivers, sound designer Ian Dickinson, fight director Philip d’Orleans, action coordinator Sam Lyon-Behan, composer Tim Phillips, and casting director Jim Carnahan. Regarding his shift in medium, Tarantino expressed his enthusiasm, stating he was keen with anticipation to give the West End a great night out.
Sacha Baron Cohen in the Title Role
The casting of Sacha Baron Cohen represents a significant crossover, marking the actor’s professional stage debut. The 54-year-old is best known for creating and portraying iconic comic characters including Ali G, Borat Sagdiyev, and Brüno Gehard. His career has earned him two Baftas, three Golden Globes, and nominations for three Oscars and six Emmys.
“Quentin called, I said yes before he even got to say his first ‘motherfucker’. When the best director in the world calls, you don’t ask questions. I am beyond delighted that we will be losing our West End virginity together. I have made him promise not to be gentle.”
Sacha Baron Cohen, actor
Tom Rothman, chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Motion Picture Group, and producer Sonia Friedman praised the casting in a joint statement, noting that Baron Cohen possesses the wit, mischief and daring this role demands.
They added, To see Quentin in action in a rehearsal room is extraordinary. His delight in working with actors, fencers, acrobats, musicians and our creative team is infectious.
While Baron Cohen is confirmed for the title character, the production team has indicated that further star casting will be announced in due course.

Public Tickets Go on Sale Today
Tickets for the production go on sale to the general public at 12:00 p.m. today, October 12, following a morning priority access window. Pricing for the run is tiered, with tickets starting at £25. Producers have confirmed that more than 16,000 tickets will be priced below £50 throughout the engagement at the Phoenix Theatre.
For Tarantino, who lives in Tel Aviv with his wife, Daniella Pick, and their two children, the play is a significant commitment. Tarantino has also remained active in other media; he is currently working on a sequel to Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood titled The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, which is due for release in November with David Fincher directing.
If it’s a flop, I’ll be done very quickly.
