Wizards of the Coast announced Darkhold Destiny
at New York Comic Con, marking the third Universes Beyond set in the multiyear deal with Marvel. The crossover launches on April 9, 2027, and introduces an original narrative spanning nearly 30 dimensions.
An Original Multiversal Narrative Built Around Marvel Villains
Unlike previous Marvel collaborations that focused on superhero rosters as they already exist in canon, the collaboration centers on an all-new storyline crafted jointly by Wizards of the Coast and Marvel. The narrative unfolds across nearly 30 dimensions and foregrounds the darker, mystical side of the Marvel Universe.
The plot centers on four main characters: Doctor Strange, Thor, Hela, and Dormammu.

“By taking the core elements players love about Magic: The Gathering, the team thoughtfully and strategically expressed those design intentions through the Marvel Universe. The narrative unfolds across nearly 30 dimensions and is centered around four main characters — Doctor Strange, Thor, Hela and Dormammu.”

Following the release of the Marvel’s Spider-Man and Marvel Super Heroes sets for Magic the Gathering, the third set in the Marvel block was announced this weekend at the tail end of the Bullpen Bulletins! with Stephen Wacker
panel. Marvel’s new Editor-in-Chief was joined on the stage by the writer with the golden pipes, Benjamin Percy, to kick off the announcement with a summoning spell meant for the Marvel character, Chthon. The panel then shared the announcement trailer above, which features Dillon Deveney (narrative set lead for Wizards of the Coast), Meredith Mulroney (lead art director), and Amanda Barker (senior product designer) talking about the inspiration behind the set and what sets it apart from the previous forays into the Marvel Universe.
“We were able to work with Marvel so closely on creating a brand new narrative for this set which we’ve never done before in Universes Beyond.”

“Since we knew we were doing the magical side of Marvel and we are Magic the Gathering, it’s a little on the nose to be like, well, how do we make this the most magic thing possible?”

“Magic players love to feel the world they’re in. So, we put a special emphasis on making sure you always felt enveloped in this magical space, in this dark space, so that you were always experiencing the story… Every card you play, you should always feel the magic in Marvel.”

Additionally, two more Marvel-Magic team-ups were promoted during the panel: a special release called “Doomsdrop” and a new Secret Lair kit titled Marvel’s History of Heroes.
The Doomsdrop is inspired by the Marvel comics and is a multi-drop collection that will predominantly feature Doctor Doom, although fans should expect other special guests from the Marvel Universe,
according to Wizards.
Commander Decks and Scene Boxes Launch in Product Release
The product release includes Commander decks and Scene Boxes. Additional card treatments and special releases accompany the main drop.
Tie-In Comics and Expansion Launch Timeline
Fans can follow the narrative prior to tabletop release through a new Marvel comic book series written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly. The digital edition debuts in February 2027, with physical copies arriving the week of the set’s release.

The set itself arrives in stores on April 9, 2027. Preorders are open now through local game stores, Amazon, and TCGplayer. In addition to the main expansion, a limited-edition drop titled Secret Lair Countdown Kit: Marvel’s History of Heroes
launches on November 2 at 9 a.m. PT for $199.99, featuring 30 illustrated cards celebrating iconic moments from Marvel comic history.
