Michael Conforto officially elected free agency on October 29, making the outfielder available to sign with any team in the MLB this winter.

A Familiar Path to Free Agency

The decision follows a 2026 campaign where Conforto played in 113 games for the Chicago Cubs. He finished the season batting .240 with 65 hits, 15 home runs, 45 RBIs, 32 runs, and one stolen base. As MLB.com noted when tracking his movements, the Cubs initially signed the free agent to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training on February 26.

Conforto’s journey spans multiple franchises. The New York Mets chose him in the 1st round of the 2014 MLB Draft, and he played his initial seven professional seasons with that franchise in New York. While hitting .279 with 27 home runs over the course of the 2017 season, Conforto earned an appearance in the MLB All-Star Game. Stints with the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers followed before his arrival in Chicago, bringing his career total to 194 home runs across 1,263 games.

Looking Ahead in Chicago

The Cubs enter the offseason looking to build on a strong regular season under manager Craig Counsell. Across 162 games, the club secured an 89-73 record to finish in second place within the National League Central. However, their postseason run ended after getting swept by the San Diego Padres in the Wild Card Series.

With Conforto now testing the open market, the front office faces decisions regarding outfield depth as winter preparations begin. Whether another club steps forward to secure the veteran’s bat or a return to Chicago remains on the table depends on how teams evaluate his production from the past year.
