Seawolves Open Hawaii Classic With Tough Test Against Colorado Mesa
The matchup at the T.C. Ching Athletic Center in Honolulu marked the season opener for both squads. Coming off an NCAA Division II national semifinals berth last spring, the Mavericks established control early by jumping out to an 8-0 lead before Tello got the Seawolves on the scoreboard.
Early Deficit Proves Too Much to Overcome
Colorado Mesa extended its advantage to 22-4 midway through the opening quarter following a fast-break score by center Brooke Eyre. The Seawolves trailed 28-10 after the first 10 minutes of play.

UAA managed to chip away at the deficit before halftime. Senior forward Lillee Duffin contributed all five of her points and three of her five rebounds in the second quarter, helping slice the margin to 39-29 at the break. Mylee Anderson added 10 points for the Seawolves, while fellow sophomore guard Kinzley Larsen chipped in nine points on 3-of-5 shooting in her career debut.
Despite staying within striking distance through the third quarter, UAA was never able to pull within single digits. The Mavericks stretched a 50-38 advantage over the final 10 minutes to secure the 74-52 victory.
This a learning opportunity for our group and we have to respond,” he added.
Looking Ahead to Chaminade
The Mavericks were led by senior guard Mason Rowland, who posted 32 points on 10-of-17 shooting to go with 11 rebounds, five assists, and five steals. Tello, a transfer from Texas A&M-International, shot 5 of 11 from the field in her first outing for UAA. Fellow TAMUI transfer Jayden Smallwood also made her debut, recording five points.
The Seawolves continue tournament play in Honolulu with two more games at the Classic. Their next contest is scheduled for Saturday at 2:15 pm ADT against local opponent Chaminade.
