The Billings Central Rams opened the Class A playoffs with a tense 13-7 victory over the Laurel Locomotives, at Herb Klindt Field on the campus of Rocky Mountain College.
Friday night’s playoff clash arrived after Laurel defeated the Rams 31-29 during their regular-season matchup in September. This time, the margins proved even tighter on the turf at Herb Klindt Field.
A Slow Start Turns into a Defensive Slugfest
Neither offense found much traction through a scoreless first quarter. Laurel broke the deadlock in the second frame when quarterback Davin Graves connected with teammate Luke Maack on an 83-yard touchdown pass, staking the Locomotives to an early 7-0 lead.
Billings Central answered before the halftime whistle sounded. Tight end Gunnar Larsen connected with Kaden Wahl on a deep pass, moving the Rams deep inside the 10-yard line. Cade Ashcraft finished the drive with a 9-yard touchdown run, locking the score at 7-7 heading into the locker rooms.
The Second-Half Ground Battle
Defense remained strong through the third quarter and into the fourth as both squads traded stops. The breakthrough finally came when Billings Central strung together a lengthy scoring drive.

Ashcraft capped the possession with his second touchdown of the game, scoring on a 2-yard run. While the subsequent point-after attempt failed, the Rams claimed a 13-7 advantage.
Laurel mounted one final response with roughly five minutes remaining in regulation. The Locomotives pushed deep into Central territory, but the Rams’ defense held firm, preserving the lead and sealing the win.
