Pierre defeats Mitchell 47-7 in Class 11AA football playoff

In the Class 11AA football bracket on Thursday night, the top-seeded Pierre Governors defeated the eighth-seeded Mitchell High School Kernels 47-7 at Hollister Field, as reported by the Mitchell Republic.

The postseason matchup marked Mitchell’s first playoff appearance since 2021. The visiting Kernels struggled to slow down a high-powered Pierre offense that established control early and did not look back.

Governors Build Early Lead Through Rapid Scoring Drives

Pierre scored on its first three possessions of the game, requiring only six plays from scrimmage to build a commanding lead. Quarterback Jerren Deal got the scoring started with a 10-yard touchdown run. Shortly after a Mitchell punt, Deal connected with Porter Hunsley on a 72-yard post route down the middle of the field, stretching the Governors’ lead to 14-0 less than six minutes into the contest.

Before the first half concluded, Deal added touchdown passes of 30-plus yards to Cooper Terwilliger and Will Danburg, the latter capped by a one-handed catch. Hudson Stoeser then returned a punt 60 yards for a touchdown, pushing Pierre ahead 34-0 with 6:23 remaining in the second quarter.

“That’s why Pierre is No. 1. And why they haven’t had a close game against anybody all year, plain and simple,” Mitchell coach Pat Larson said after the game to KORN-AM radio. “They’re really, really good and the film doesn’t do them justice.”

Facing a 47-0 deficit in the fourth quarter with a running clock in effect, Mitchell broke onto the scoreboard. Senior Kyson Herrmann took over at quarterback and directed a six-play, 60-yard drive utilizing a direct-snap running game, culminating in a 3-yard touchdown run. Gavin Zilla converted the extra point to close out the scoring.

Governors Total 461 Yards of Offense in Dominant Win

Pierre finished the night with 461 yards of total offense, including 310 yards passing from Deal on an 8-for-12 performance. Hunsley led all receivers with 117 yards from scrimmage, while Terwilliger added 72 yards on three catches and Stoeser recorded a 66-yard reception. Hunsley also contributed a 45-yard rushing touchdown in the third quarter, and Brecken Fuhrman added a 32-yard rushing score in the fourth.

Mitchell generated 184 yards of offense, with 180 yards coming on the ground across 50 carries. Herrmann paced the Kernels’ rushing attack with 62 yards on six carries in the second half. Tayven Red Day and Bailor Kristensen each gained 38 yards, and Lawson LeBrun added 37 yards. Quarterback Brady Hoesing completed 1 of 6 passes for 4 yards and an interception.

The Kernels finished the season with a 4-6 record. Defensively, Bryer Stach recorded a sack, while Owen Schelske and Noah Bennett notched tackles for loss.

“I thought we played hard. We competed as best we could, and we know where we stack up now,” Larson said. “We know where the next step is for us to take, for us to get to that level, and that’s what we’re going to have to work on in the offseason.”

Larson added that he would miss the 10 seniors who had been with the program for all four years of his tenure, noting they were a big part of the program’s growth.

With the victory, Pierre improved to 10-0 on the season, having scored at least 38 points in every game. The Governors advance to the state semifinals scheduled for Nov. 6, where they will face No. 5 Sturgis.
