Wisconsin Football at 5-2: A Midseason Stock Take

The Wisconsin Badgers sit squarely at 5-2 and sixth in the Big Ten standings, marking their first appearance in the AP Poll since Week 2 of the 2023 season by landing at No. 25, the Daily Cardinal reported. That ranking follows an October 24 dismantling of then-No. 16 USC, which punctuated a first half of the 2026 campaign defined by gritty road wins and stark offensive growing pains.

Head coach Luke Fickell’s squad has endured a winding road since kicking off the year with a punishing 41-13 loss against No. 4 Notre Dame at Lambeau Field. Between that early stumble and a penalty-filled affair against No. 12 UCLA, the Badgers managed to knock off No. 13 Penn State in Happy Valley. With five games remaining on the schedule, the midseason report card across position groups and coaching staff reveals a team anchored by an elite defense while searching for an offensive identity.

Defense and Special Teams Excel with Strong Play

Mike Tressel’s defense has carried the load, earning an A+ grade for holding opponents to just 15.3 points per game—tied for fourth best in the Big Ten. The defensive line earned a straight A by allowing a meager 96.4 rushing yards per contest and racking up 35.0 tackles for loss, highlighted by holding the Trojans to negative 17 rushing yards. Linemen Hammond Russell IV and Junior Poyser have anchored that trench warfare.

Behind them, the linebackers claim the roster’s highest marks. Cooper Catalano leads the team with 60 tackles, while Mason Posa boasts an 88.0 overall defensive grade from Pro Football Focus, ranking 12th among 766 qualified linebackers. Sebastian Cheeks has added five sacks and two forced fumbles, giving Wisconsin its most disruptive second level in years. The secondary rounds out the defensive success with an A- grade, yielding just four passing touchdowns through seven games.

Special teams offer equal dependability. Kicker Gavin Lahm has converted 10 of 12 field goals and 21 of 22 extra points, while punter Sean West averages 43 yards per kick, punctuated by a 70-yard boot against Notre Dame that pinned the Irish at their own one-yard line.

Offense Struggles with Low Production and Passing Ranks

Offensively, the picture is considerably more complicated. Offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes earned the lowest mark on the staff with a C grade, as the unit averages just 330.1 yards per game—fourth-fewest in the Big Ten. Their 179.4 passing yards per game rank second-worst in the conference ahead of only Michigan.

Senior quarterback Colton Joseph holds a B- grade. A transfer from Old Dominion, Joseph has thrown for 1,256 yards and 11 touchdowns but completed just 57.2 percent of his passes. Though he has avoided a giveaway in three straight starts, he has failed to eclipse 150 yards passing in any of those games. His rushing ability salvages his evaluation, as he leads the team with 365 yards and four scores on the ground.

The running back committee sits at C+. Abu Sama III leads the trio with 295 yards, though 72 of those came on a single touchdown run against Western Illinois. Darrion Dupree has added 215 yards and two scores, while Bryan Jackson II contributes 117 yards and two touchdowns. Collectively averaging 4.9 yards per carry, the backfield has yet to establish consistent ground traction.

The offensive line offers a bright spot with a B+ grade. Wide receivers and tight ends also grade out at B-, hampered by limited explosive play generation despite standout moments like Tyrell Henry’s 14-catch game against Eastern Michigan and Jacob Harris’s 72-yard game-winner against Penn State.

Fickell Holds B Grade While Recruiting Top Talent

Luke Fickell holds a B+ grade following a polarizing tenure that has occasionally drawn fan frustration. Beyond righting the ship after the Notre Dame blowout, Fickell has strengthened the program's future. The Badgers secured commitments from five-star edge Jalanie George and four-star linebacker Blake Betton, who flipped from Penn State and attended the USC victory.

With five games left, Wisconsin controls its own destiny in the Big Ten. How far the Badgers climb will depend entirely on whether the offense can find its footing to match an elite defense.
