Columbia is updating Complete Streets policy to enhance city safety

The City of Columbia, Missouri, is updating its 2004 Complete Streets policy to align with modern best practices and address current mobility challenges, with a revised framework expected by summer 2026. The update, led by the Public Works Department in partnership with Crawford, Murphy & Tilly (CMT), focuses on improving accessibility, safety, and multimodal connectivity across the city.

Complete Streets are defined as infrastructure designed to provide safe, accessible, and comfortable travel for all users, regardless of transportation mode. Key features include multimodal support for walking, cycling, driving, and public transit, as well as integrated design that connects schools, parks, and commercial areas while considering surrounding land use. The policy review will address infrastructure gaps, incorporate new design standards, and support active transportation to reduce congestion and environmental impact.

City Schedules Open Houses and Surveys for Public Feedback

Public engagement is central to the update process, with activities including online and in-person surveys, open house events, and community meetings. Two open houses have been scheduled for June, with details to be posted on the city’s website. Residents are also encouraged to take a short survey to share feedback on mobility needs and concerns. Streets designed for all modes of transport lead to safer conditions, better health outcomes and efficient use of city resources. Community outreach will include walk and bike audits, field demonstrations, and pop-up events. Check the Key Dates section for more information.

Policy Modernization Goals

The revised policy aims to enhance safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and people with disabilities while addressing gaps in infrastructure that affect underserved communities. The update will involve a comprehensive review of existing policies, research into national best practices, and revisions to city ordinances. A finalized version is anticipated by summer 2026 [source].

The initiative shows efforts to create streets that prioritize safety, efficiency, and equitable access for all residents. Event details will be posted here as they are scheduled. Take the survey! It should take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete.
