Driver Sentenced to 20 Years in Prison for Fatal 2023 Hit-and-Run Crash

Two Decades for a Life Lost: The Sentencing of Mitchel Miyashiro

On Wednesday, a Honolulu courtroom closed the final chapter of a tragedy that began on a quiet morning in February 2023. Mitchel Miyashiro, 49, was sentenced to 20 years in prison for the hit-and-run death of 16-year-old McKinley High School student Sara Yara. First Circuit Court Judge Trish K. Morikawa handed down two consecutive 10-year sentences for first-degree negligent homicide and collision involving death or serious bodily injury, with credit for time already served.

The sentencing, as reported by Hawaii News Now, arrives following the fatal incident on February 15, 2023. On that morning, Yara and a 17-year-old friend were walking to school, crossing Kapiolani Boulevard in a marked crosswalk near Kamakee Street. Miyashiro, driving at speeds estimated between 39 and 47 mph in a 25 mph zone, ran a red light and struck both students. Yara died from the injuries she sustained in the collision.

A History of Unsafe Driving

The severity of the 20-year sentence was driven largely by Miyashiro’s extensive record of traffic violations. During the proceedings, Judge Morikawa highlighted that his history included 48 speeding judgments, 20 moving violations, and approximately 10 prior convictions for driving without a license. According to the judge, she had never seen a traffic abstract so large.

Addressing the defendant directly, Judge Morikawa noted that Miyashiro had been given ample opportunity over the years to correct his behavior and adhere to societal norms. Instead, his continued disregard for traffic laws ultimately led to the tragedy on Kapiolani Boulevard. The judge concluded that consecutive sentences were a necessary measure to protect the public from further harm.

Following the crash, Miyashiro did not stop to assist the victims. He fled the scene and later attempted to cover his actions by falsely reporting that his truck had been stolen. He eventually pleaded no contest to all four charges on March 20, 2026, which included additional concurrent one-year sentences for collision involving bodily injury and driving without a valid license.

The Weight of Forgiveness and Remorse

The courtroom proceedings were marked by moments of profound emotional gravity. Phoebe Yara, the twin sister of the victim, stood as a witness to the tragedy, having been present at the scene. Despite the trauma, she expressed a desire to lead with love and kindness, stating her gratitude that there were no additional casualties beyond those already harmed.

Sara’s father, Dan Yara, spoke directly to the defendant during the hearing, offering a message of forgiveness grounded in his personal faith. He cited Colossians 3:13, telling Miyashiro that he chose to release the burden of hatred rather than hold onto it. For his part, Miyashiro expressed remorse for his decisions, acknowledging that his actions caused the death of the teenager and the injury of her friend. He told the court he constantly thinks about the choices he made that day and wishes he could change the outcome.

Prosecutor Stresses Limits of Legal Accountability

Prosecuting Attorney Steve Alm emphasized that while the sentence provides a measure of legal accountability, it cannot restore what was lost. The prosecution had requested extended prison terms, which the judge denied, alongside a request for restitution. For the community, the case shows the human cost of reckless driving.
