Javits Frimpong, a 15-year-old student who had moved to New York City from Ghana just one year ago, was fatally shot Thursday morning while walking to school in the Bronx. The incident, which has deeply disturbed the Claremont neighborhood and the city’s West African community, occurred near East 171st Street and Third Avenue, just steps from the teenager’s home and moments away from Crotona Park.

The Fatal Morning in the Bronx

According to reporting by The Guardian, the New York City Police Department (NYPD) received reports of a shooting at approximately 9:24 a.m. on Thursday. Responding officers discovered the teenager suffering from a gunshot wound to his stomach. Despite being rushed to a local hospital, Javits was pronounced dead. Surveillance footage obtained by investigators reportedly shows the 15-year-old running for his life, pursued by a person dressed in black. Other angles appear to show masked individuals in dark clothing fleeing the scene immediately following the gunfire.

While the investigation remains active, authorities are currently searching for three teenage boys in connection to the shooting. As of Friday, the NYPD had not made any arrests. While neighborhood crime statistics show a downward trend—with shootings down 37% and murders down 44% in 2026 compared to the previous year—this specific act of violence has shattered a family that arrived in the United States seeking opportunity and safety.

Father Links Son Death to Bullying Reports

The tragedy has been compounded by claims from the victim’s father, Thomas Frimpong, who believes his son was targeted due to his efforts to report bullying at his school, DreamYard Preparatory. As noted in reports by NBC New York, the father stated that his son had recently complained to school officials about a classmate, an action he says resulted in the suspension of two students. Thomas Frimpong, who works as a taxi driver, described Javits as a “clever” and “quiet” boy who kept to himself and had few acquaintances outside of school.

I definitely know because he don’t know anybody here. He don’t go out. I ask him to go out, he said no. He’s always on his phone, said Thomas Frimpong.

The grieving father has called for those responsible to surrender to the police, emphasizing that his son was an innocent child. The school and the Department of Education have not yet provided comments regarding the bullying allegations, and an NYPD spokesperson declined to confirm whether the reported harassment is considered a primary motive for the attack.

A Community in Mourning

The loss of Javits Frimpong has reached beyond the borders of the Bronx. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Ghana’s minister of foreign affairs, issued a statement on Friday condemning the violence and pledging to pursue justice. The Ghana Diaspora Public Affairs Collective also weighed in, highlighting the heartbreak of a family whose hopes for a “promising future” were violently extinguished just twelve months after their arrival in America.

For now, the Claremont community is left to process the loss. Family and friends held a candlelight vigil on Friday night to honor the teenager, while arrangements are underway to bring the boy’s mother from Ghana to the United States. While the investigation into the motive and the identity of the suspects continues, the question of how a 15-year-old could be hunted down on his way to class remains a haunting reality for a city that promised his family safety.
