Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly Endorses Lynne Walz for Nebraska Governor

OMAHA — Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly traveled north from Topeka to endorse Nebraska gubernatorial candidate Lynne Walz, cementing a cross-state alliance between Democratic women operating in deeply conservative territory.

A Shared Blueprint for Red-State Executive Office

“Lynne Walz is everything Nebraska needs right now and everything Kansas wants in a neighbor,” Kelly said during the meeting in Omaha, reported WOWT. “She’s smart, she’s experienced, she’s got the right value set.”

Kelly pointed to their shared backgrounds as Democratic women holding or seeking executive office in states with deep conservative leanings. She emphasized the absolute requirement of coalition-building across the aisle, noting that even within Nebraska’s unique single-chamber legislature, leaders must still bring everybody together to build consensus and move policies forward.

Walz Urges Unified State Voice to Tackle Systemic Challenges

Walz outlined a platform centered on political unity to tackle systemic challenges ranging from property taxes to intense economic pressures on agricultural operations. She stressed the necessity of standing against detrimental policies while forging a unified state voice that bridges urban centers and rural farming communities.

“The number one thing we need to do is stand up against bad policy,” Walz said. “The other thing I think is important is to be able to unite our state as one, as one strong voice. It’s not just business, urban versus rural, farmers and ranchers. It has to be the entire state working together.”

Tracing the Roots of Intensifying Political Friction

According to Walz, achieving that unity remains a difficult task in an environment shaped by years of intensifying political friction. She traced the hardening of local political divisions back to 2023, when a surge of contentious social issues reached the legislative floor.

“There were a lot of social issues… that came to our legislative floor, issues that were meant to divide us, and it certainly did,” Walz said. “Intentionally meant to divide us. It divided not only our Legislature but our state, our family, our friends.”

Walz Rejects Blanket Budget Cuts to Fix Deficits

Addressing the state’s persistent property tax burden, Walz maintained that the issue demands long-term economic growth paired with a strategy to resolve the state budget deficit, noting that the problem cannot be fixed overnight. She drew a sharp contrast with across-the-board spending reductions, stating that she would reject a blanket 5% budget cut as governor.

“Nebraskans are smart enough to know that we’re in trouble,” Walz said of the state’s budget crisis. “One of the things I won’t do as governor is a 5% cut across the board. That is lazy, it’s irresponsible, and it hurts so many families.”

Shifting Dynamics in the Gubernatorial Field

Beyond fiscal policy and legislative divides, Walz also suggested that the entry of Brett Lindstrom into the gubernatorial contest could complicate incumbent Gov. Jim Pillen’s path to re-election.
