The Kentucky Wildcats closed out their home slate for the 2026 season with a 1-0 shutout win over the Georgia Southern Eagles at the Bell Soccer Complex.
With the victory, the Wildcats pushed their record to 2-9-4 overall and 2-4-2 in the Sun Belt Conference, climbing into seventh place in the league standings with eight points. Meanwhile, the Eagles dropped to 6-5-4 overall and 2-4-2 in conference play.
Capitalizing on an Early Mistake
Neither side generated much offensive rhythm during the opening minutes of the match. That changed in the 27th minute when freshman midfielder Ari Saliu broke the deadlock, firing home off an unforced error by the Georgia Southern defense with an assist credited to Bains Smith. That sequence produced the only shot on goal for either team during the entire first half, allowing Kentucky to carry a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
The second half brought sustained pressure from the home side just under 20 minutes in. A sharp through ball found Smith inside the 18-yard box, but Georgia Southern goalkeeper Luca Maxim snuffed out the attempt. Forward Costa Iliadis was positioned for the follow-up but could not convert. Just two minutes later, Iliadis tested Maxim again from nearly identical real estate, forcing the Eagles’ keeper into his second save of the night.
Defense Holds the Line
As the clock wound down, the final 20 minutes devolved into a physical, defensive struggle. Kentucky needed every bit of that resolve to preserve the narrow advantage in front of the home crowd.
While possession remained nearly even at 53% to 47% in favor of the visitors, the Wildcats controlled the attack by outshooting Georgia Southern 15-5, including a 4-1 edge in shots on target. Wildcat goalkeeper Benjamin Rasmussen was called upon to make just one save, anchoring a defensive unit that secured their second clean sheet of the season and their second in as many matches.
| Team | Overall Record | Conference Record | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kentucky Wildcats | 2-9-4 | 2-4-2 | 8 |
| Georgia Southern Eagles | 6-5-4 | 2-4-2 | 8 |
Rasmussen had already tallied 48 saves this season, ranking him second in the Sun Belt, while Georgia Southern’s attack was anchored by Broden Beorlegui and his eight goals. Despite those opposing threats, the Kentucky backline locked down when it mattered most to secure the three points.
The Regular Season Finale in Atlanta
Both programs are jockeying for crucial positioning ahead of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament, which is scheduled to begin on November 8.
Kentucky will wrap up its regular season on November 3 at 7 p.m. ET, traveling to Atlanta, Georgia, to face the Georgia State Panthers.
