Dallas police arrested two suspects and detained a third on Tuesday, October 27, at a Motel 6 after tracking a vehicle stolen during a fatal carjacking in Louisiana. The arrests occurred at a motel located at 9600 C.F. Hawn Freeway following a coordinated effort between Texas and Louisiana authorities.
A Dallas Police K-9 officer located a stolen white GMC pickup truck in the motel parking lot after receiving an alert from a Flock camera. Motel staff directed officers to room 262, where two males and one female were staying. Dallas County Jail records identify one of the suspects as 19-year-old Jamie Santos Martinez, who faces holds for theft of a motor vehicle, first-degree murder, and an immigration hold. The Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office also confirmed that a juvenile female suspect is being charged in connection with the crime.
The Louisiana Homicide
The investigation began around 7:30 p.m. on Monday when Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s deputies responded to a homicide in the 200 block of Despain Street. Investigators identified the victim as 35-year-old Jorge Andino Espinal. Police stated that the suspects murdered Espinal during a carjacking and stole his white GMC pickup, which investigators believe was driven directly from Louisiana to the Dallas motel.
Role of Surveillance Technology
Authorities used a network of technology to trace the vehicle across state lines. According to Valerie Ponseti, a Public Information Officer with the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office, the license plate was entered into the Flock system in Lafayette, Louisiana, allowing investigators to trace the plate until it was located in Dallas.
Extradition Process
Dallas homicide detectives are currently coordinating with Louisiana detectives to arrange extradition. Martinez and the juvenile suspect will be transported back to Lafayette Parish to face charges of theft of a motor vehicle and first-degree murder. Regarding the use of the surveillance tools, Ponseti stated, We have a whole network of technology that we’re able to use and, in this case, we were able to use to track the movements of the victim’s vehicle.
