The New York Rangers return to the ice to face the Edmonton Oilers, looking to snap a three-game skid. Blueshirt Banter reported that the matchup brings together a struggling Rangers squad and an Oilers team fresh off a 4-0 shutout against the New York Islanders.
Rangers Lineup Shuffling and Missing Pieces
The Rangers enter this contest actively tinkering with their top six. Pavel Dorofeyev has been elevated to the top line alongside Mika Zibanejad and Alexis Lafrenière. Eeli Tolvanen missed the team’s practice session due to personal reasons, leaving his status a game-time question.
Defensively and structurally, the club is still adapting to life without star goaltender Igor Shesterkin anchoring the back end.

Oilers Bring Momentum Despite Missing Key Skaters
On the other side of the sheet, the Oilers arrive with significant momentum following their dominant win over the Islanders. A victory against New York would propel Edmonton into a tie for first place in the NHL standings. However, head coach Kris Knoblauch’s lineup remains short-handed. The Oilers are playing without Zach Hyman, Matt Savoie, and Issac Howard.
In goal, Edmonton will turn to Matt Tomkins. This marks Tomkins’ first NHL appearance since the 2023-24 season, presenting a potential opportunity for the Rangers’ offensive attack to test a fresh face in the crease.

Spotlight on Alberts Šmits
Rangers fifth overall draft pick Alberts Šmits remains a focal point of developmental tracking as he searches for his first career NHL point. At just 18 years old, Šmits has experienced an up-and-down introduction to the league while playing alongside veteran partner Braden Schneider. Facing elite Edmonton forwards like Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl—both off to historic starts this season—will test the teenager’s adjustments at the professional level.
