Remembering Harold “Hay Wire” Wickwire of Elma and Olympia
Harold Jeffery Wickwire, known to his family and friends as H.J. or “Hay Wire,” passed away on October 28, 2026, according to Harrison Family Mortuary.
Born in McCleary, Washington, on July 20, 1973, Wickwire grew up in Elma, Washington. He spent his youth building a reputation as a fiercely independent person who preferred to live life on his own terms. Rather than asking for assistance, he tackled challenges independently, reaching out only when no other options remained.
Wickwire Built a Decades-Long Career in Logging
That self-reliant streak shaped his working life. Wickwire entered the logging industry as a teenager, carrying a strong work ethic into the trades that sustained him throughout the years.
Away from work, he gravitated entirely toward the outdoors. Whether he was out fishing, hunting, or clam digging, outdoor spaces defined his happiest moments. During his school years in Elma, he also channeled his energy into athletics as a member of the local wrestling team.
Wickwire Maintained Close Bonds with Family and Friends
Wickwire never married and did not have children, but he maintained deep ties with family and long-standing friends. His mother, Karen Meagher, and stepfather, Jace Meagher, both reside in Olympia. He is also survived by his uncle Bill Wickwire, aunts Jeanie Lillie and Charlotte Emerson of Elma, aunt Alice Bonilla of Mesa, Arizona, and numerous cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Vern, and his brother, Vern. Beyond his human relationships, Wickwire shared a close bond with his dog, “Badger,” who served as his steadfast companion. He also maintained enduring connections with lifelong friend Jo Ann Bagley and childhood friend Shannon Chetwood.
