One Killed and Eight Injured in Shooting After Magic City Classic

One person is dead and eight others are wounded following a mass shooting that erupted late Saturday night near Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama. The violence broke out just outside Legion Field following the conclusion of the annual “Magic City Classic,” a college football rivalry game between Alabama State and Alabama A&M, police said.

The Scene at Graymont Avenue

While the game itself drew a massive crowd of nearly 70,000 fans, the shooting occurred after the majority of families and spectators had already departed the stadium. According to Michael Pickett, chief of the Birmingham Police Department, the gunfire broke out near Graymont Avenue, an area where vendors had set up stalls for the event. Chief Pickett expressed relief that the casualty count was not higher, given the scale of the crowd that had been in the vicinity only moments prior.

The Magic City Classic holds significant cultural weight, representing more than a century of history between two of the nation’s most prominent historically Black universities. The intensity of the rivalry, which Alabama A&M won 31-28 on Saturday, often draws some of the largest attendance figures in the college football division. The deep roots of this contest are such that Alabama State coach Eddie Robinson Jr. has previously advocated for the creation of a dedicated Hall of Fame to honor the game’s legacy.

Police Detain Suspect and Recover Weapons from Scene

As of Sunday morning, the specific circumstances that led to the shooting remain unclear. Birmingham Police spokesperson De’Rell Freeman confirmed that authorities have detained one individual who is currently being transported to police headquarters for questioning. Investigators have also secured “multiple weapons” from the scene, which are now being processed as part of the ongoing inquiry.

While the Birmingham Police Department has not yet released details regarding the identity of the deceased or the condition of the eight wounded individuals, the department’s focus remains on the forensic analysis of the weapons recovered and the testimonies gathered from the detained suspect.
