Rolijah Hardy Injury Forces Last-Minute Shuffle in Indiana’s Overtime Win Over Minnesota
Indiana linebacker Rolijah Hardy missed the Hoosiers’ 23-16 overtime win against Minnesota after suffering an unexpected back injury during pregame warmups. The sudden setback forced a late-stage defensive restructuring just twenty minutes before kickoff at Memorial Stadium.
“That was like a shock,” Indiana coach Curt Cignetti said postgame. “Something popped in his back in pregame. They (trainers) tried to take care of him, but it didn’t work. That was like a 20-minute-before-kickoff adjustment we had to make.”
With Hardy sidelined, true freshman linebacker Jacob Savage stepped directly into the starting lineup. Savage delivered four tackles, one tackle for loss, two pass breakups, and one quarterback hurry.
The defensive rotation absorbed the absence efficiently. Starting linebacker Isaiah Jones contributed six tackles, including two solo stops, while backup linebacker Jeff Utzinger added two tackles, a sack, and a tackle for loss. Collectively, the Indiana defense limited Minnesota to 215 total yards and a 3-of-15 conversion rate on third downs.

“We have good players over there, we really do,” Cignetti said. “Our front’s really good, that’s where it starts. You think back in the day, all the great Super Bowl teams were great up front on defense. We’re really good up front on defense.”
Prior to the pregame injury, Hardy had started the previous eight games for the Hoosiers. He entered the matchup as the team’s second-leading tackler with 58 total stops, accompanied by 5.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, one interception, three quarterback hurries, and one pass breakup.
The overtime victory lifts Indiana to an 8-1 overall record and a 5-1 mark in Big Ten conference play. The Hoosiers now enter a scheduled bye week before hosting USC on Saturday, Nov. 14, in Bloomington.
