Arkansas Football Evaluates Staff Changes Amid Offensive Struggles

Arkansas head coach Ryan Silverfield is keeping his options open regarding his coaching staff as the Razorbacks face a difficult stretch of the 2026 season. During his Monday press conference, Silverfield addressed the possibility of in-season personnel moves, a topic that has gained traction across college football after Oklahoma parted ways with its offensive coordinator, Ben Arbuckle.

The urgency stems from a statistical reality that has left the Razorbacks at the bottom of the Southeastern Conference. Arkansas currently ranks last in the SEC in total offense, averaging 336.1 yards per game, and sits at the conference basement in scoring with 19.6 points per contest. Silverfield emphasized that his primary responsibility is to position the program for success, noting that he evaluates every facet of the operation—from travel logistics and nutrition plans to the coaching staff—on a daily basis.

“Whether it’s an in-season staff shakeup, a postseason staff shakeup, a change in nutrition plan, a change of travel plans, it’s always my job to make sure that whatever we’re doing, it’s putting our guys in the best position to have success between the white lines on Saturday,” Silverfield said, according to ArkansasOnline.

Defining Play-Calling Autonomy

While the prospect of staff changes remains on the table, Silverfield offered a vote of confidence for offensive coordinator Tim Cramsey. The two have a long-standing professional history, with Cramsey serving as Silverfield’s coordinator since 2022 during their time at Memphis. Cramsey has faced scrutiny from fans throughout the season, but Silverfield maintains that the coordinator has the ability to call plays during games.

Silverfield clarified that his own role during competition is centered on situational awareness—identifying favorable matchups, anticipating defensive responses, and managing personnel checks. While the weekly game plan is a collaborative effort, the final call sheet on Saturday belongs to Cramsey. “If there’s 80 plays in a game, Cramsey has done a great job in the past and will continue to do a good job of putting us in the right position throughout,” Silverfield stated.

The Statistical Turnover Problem

Beyond play-calling, the Razorbacks are struggling with ball security, a metric that serves as a stark contrast to Silverfield’s tenure at Memphis. During his six-year run with the Tigers, Silverfield’s teams consistently prioritized protecting the football, ranking among the top 30% of FBS teams in fewest turnovers lost from 2022 to 2025. This included a standout 2024 season where the team ranked No. 2 nationally with only eight turnovers lost, WholeHogSports reported.

The current situation in Fayetteville is different. Arkansas has lost 12 turnovers this season, ranking 100th nationally. The most recent loss—a 34-10 defeat against No. 23 Missouri—saw the Razorbacks commit four turnovers. Junior quarterback KJ Jackson has accounted for much of that total, with five interceptions and four lost fumbles on his record. Silverfield was blunt regarding these lapses, labeling the turnover issues “inexcusable” while also pointing to seven dropped passes as a primary factor in the offense’s inability to sustain momentum.

Injuries Limit Offensive Production Before Auburn Game

The team’s offensive output was further hampered by injuries against Missouri. Wide receiver Chris Marshall, who has been managing a hamstring injury, was unavailable, and running back Braylen Russell was not at full health, logging only one carry for no gain. Silverfield described the status of both players as a “wait and see” situation ahead of this Saturday’s matchup against Auburn at Jordan Hare Stadium.

Amid these internal challenges, Silverfield also brushed off a post-game comment from Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz, who jokingly complimented the new lighting at Reynolds Razorback Stadium. Silverfield, who advocated for improved stadium and facility lighting upon his arrival in December 2025, stated he had not heard the remark, noting he avoids social media to maintain focus on the team’s performance. For a program sitting at the bottom of the SEC offensive rankings, the priority remains singular: finding a way to win games.
