South Lakes pushed its record to 7-1 on Friday night with a 40-28 victory over James Madison, shaking up the Concorde District race as the regular season winds down.
A Clash of Heavyweights in the Concorde District
Entering the night with identical 6-1 records, both programs played like playoff contenders from the opening whistle. James Madison took the field as the defending region champions, while South Lakes countered with a deep roster of experienced talent. By the final buzzer, the Seahawks had fought their way through a game that tested both sidelines for a full 60 minutes.
“This game is one of those district rivalries where it takes all 60 minutes to find a winner, and tonight, it was us,” Seahawks linebacker Riggins Legler said. “This game showed us that we just have to keep the hustle up and play with more intensity the rest of the way.”
The scoring opened in explosive fashion when South Lakes quarterback Christian Wyatt connected with Joshua-Benjamin Dagbe on a screen pass that turned into a 65-yard touchdown. Madison answered immediately on the ground, as senior running back Will Smoot broke free for a 75-yard touchdown run to tie the game.
Wyatt Scores Three Touchdowns to Build Halftime Lead
The trading of blows continued through the first half. Wyatt pushed the Seahawks ahead 20-7 with his second scoring play, though the Warhawks responded by blocking the subsequent extra point. Madison quarterback Lucas Vacaflor then targeted Nicky Cerefice on a deep pass downfield, cutting the deficit to 20-14. Wyatt added a third touchdown before halftime, though a missed two-point conversion left the score at 26-14 as teams headed to the locker rooms.

Following homecoming festivities, the hosts seized momentum early in the third quarter. Madison turned the ball over on a failed fourth-down conversion on its opening possession of the half. South Lakes capitalized immediately when senior Nick Piccarelli launched a touchdown pass to Dagbe, stretching the lead to 33-14.
“When I caught the swing pass, I just saw Josh down the field standing free, and I just threw it to him. This is a big win for our guys, and those guys across the way are a respectable program,” Piccarelli said.
South Lakes Defense Seals Victory After Late Comeback
Down by 19 points, Madison mounted a significant comeback attempt. Smoot punched in a touchdown run following a sustained drive into Seahawk territory, then broke loose for a 57-yard touchdown run down the sideline to narrow the margin to 33-28.
With the lead trimmed to five points, the Reston crowd grew tense as the Warhawks threatened to complete the comeback. However, the South Lakes defense stiffened, securing crucial interceptions from Collin Wall and Cameron Soto to halt Madison’s momentum. Wyatt capped the scoring by connecting with Dagbe once more, sealing a six-touchdown night for the offense.
“We’re all chasing dominance and tonight was a big win for our group,” Wall said. “The critic doesn’t count; credit belongs to the man who is in the arena, and we were the man tonight.”
The Stretch Run to the Postseason
The victory leaves South Lakes at 7-1, staying right alongside the Oakton Cougars at the top of the district standings. Madison drops to 6-2 ahead of a matchup against Oakton.
With the regular season nearing its conclusion, neither team has time to catch its breath. South Lakes faces Centreville before a regular-season finale against Westfield. Meanwhile, Madison matches up with Centreville following its game against Oakton. Given the district's strong competition, Friday night's battle could well serve as a preview of the Region 6D championship game.
