A Dream Interrupted by Fire

“I’m definitely lucky to be alive. I feel like God got a plan for me. He ain’t finished with me yet. He burned me up, but he ain’t burned me down.” These are the words of Shareef Shaheed, a St. Paul entrepreneur who is currently recovering in a hospital bed after a catastrophic explosion destroyed his food truck during a routine test run. What was intended to be the launch of his new business venture, Soul4Life, turned into a life-altering emergency on the afternoon of Sunday, October 25.

Shaheed, who spent a decade working two jobs—including a stint as a cook at the Dorothy Day Center in St. Paul—had saved diligently to purchase a used truck and bring his vision of southern comfort food to the city. Instead of serving his first customers, he, his fiancée, Megan Welle, and a friend were left fighting for their lives. FOX 9 reported that the explosion occurred on the city’s East Side while the trio was testing the truck’s equipment. According to Shaheed, he had turned on the propane tank and was preparing to light the pilot for the deep fryer when the blast occurred, physically throwing him from the vehicle.

The Physics of the Blast

While the St. Paul Fire Department continues to investigate the exact cause of the ignition, the physical toll on the victims is clear. Shaheed sustained second and third-degree burns to his face, hands, and legs. He has already undergone surgery, and both he and his two companions are expected to remain at Regions Hospital for several weeks. The nature of the incident highlights the inherent, often overlooked risks associated with mobile food preparation.

According to data tracked by the Global Incident Tracker, explosion events involving fuel or gas often result in complex injuries, including pressure-wave damage and blunt trauma, in addition to thermal burns. The unpredictability of these events is precisely why fire marshals across the country emphasize strict adherence to National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 96 standards, which govern ventilation control and fire protection for commercial cooking operations. When a vehicle is retrofitted for commercial kitchen use, the transition from a standard gas system to a high-output commercial setup introduces significant points of failure if seals or pilot lights are compromised.

Survival Instincts and the Road Ahead

Shaheed credits his years of professional kitchen experience with helping him survive the initial blast. “Being around a kitchen, I knew to stop, drop and roll,” he told reporters from his hospital bed. “So at that time, that was on my mind. I was rolling to make sure that the fire is put out.”

As reported by Dispatch Times, the fire department faced logistical hurdles during the response because the truck was located in an alleyway, which complicated access for emergency vehicles. Despite these challenges, responders were able to bring the situation under control quickly. However, the economic reality for the victims is now as daunting as the physical recovery. With both Shaheed and Welle unable to work, their family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to manage the mounting medical bills and daily living expenses.

The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the volatility inherent in the small business sector. For many, a food truck is more than a vehicle; it is a decade of savings and a singular hope for financial independence. The sudden destruction of that asset forces a pivot from growth to survival, a transition that Shaheed is currently navigating with a mix of gratitude and the difficult mental struggle that follows such trauma.

“I’m doing well, man. I’m doin’ well. A little emotional, it’s a mental struggle,” Shaheed shared. For now, the focus remains entirely on the weeks of recovery ahead at Regions Hospital, while the investigation into why a simple test run turned into a life-threatening explosion remains ongoing.
